I could understand his initial intention of having some kind of nsfw filter for radical opinions, even though the implementation was questionable. And I was honestly sad about the shit storm that hit him. Too many people here pretend to be more respectful and empathetic than average, but will happily dogpile to get a piece of a person given the right momentum.
But this ddos code is hard to defend, it goes against his own initial intention. He should have walked away before reaching this point.
Can we avoid adding new events to this sad chain of events now?

D’après ce que je comprends, le dev voulait faire de son projet une interface plus safe pour rendre Lemmy plus accessible à la moyenne (genre filtre nsfw, mais pour les propos politiquement radicaux). Le radicalisme étant défini par lui comme les appels à la violence ou au meutres, très communs sur Lemmy (par exemple contre les patrons ou les colons israéliens, pour les plus fréquents). Le genre de propos qui ne sont pas non plus légaux dans la plupart des démocraties. Je vous rappelle que jlai.lu a été victime d’utilisateurs souhaitant que les attentats islamistes à Paris adviennent de nouveau et que cela nous à mener à nous défédérer de certaines instances.

Toujours d’après lui, les (une ou deux?) instances queer n’ont pas été bloquées parce que queer, mais parce que leurs admins ne modèrent pas ce genre d’appels à la violence quand ça va dans leur sens (gauche radicale).

Maintenant, ce qui est à mon avis l’aspect le plus objectivement questionable c’est l’implémentation relativement cachée des blacklists (ça reste un fichier open source accessible par tout le monde). D’après lui, cette implémentation est ainsi pour éviter qu’elle ne soit trop facile à contourner. À mon avis, être visible, claire et facile à modifier par admin, depuis le début, même si politiquement orienté, aurait été mieux.

Personnellement ça me fait surtout désespérer de pouvoir avoir des conversations raisonnables sur Lemmy. J’avais déjà failli quitter Lemmy à mes débuts avant de comprendre le phénomène tankie et de les bloquer largement. Mais le radicalisme et l’agressivité continuent de transpirer un peu partout sur Lemmy.

The wiki doesn’t help because there is no common thread between the groups listed, and they aren’t all comunist. Like, iran? The article goes on to talk about modern russia. That’s not communist either. The only thing I can find in common is that they are not “western”.

I think it implies a sort of connection in this way: Marxism -> opposition to capitalism -> opposition to countries championing capitalism such as the USA -> defending organizations who oppose USA -> defending Islamist organizations or current Russia.

I have observed those thoughts combined within instances that claim to be Marxist on Lemmy. Have you not?

I believe all human rights abuse are bad whatever the ideology or absence of it. But maybe it’s even more depressing when it comes from an ideology base that claims to be in favor of the oppressed people. It’s also most visible from the leftist side here, because far right instances are more unanimously ostracized. I never saw them in my feed personally, probably due to admins early filtering.

I recommend you to check the profiles of the creators of Lemmy which are also administrators of lemmy.ml. At least one of them has plenty of writings that make their ideology pretty clear.

If this wiki page doesn’t help you understand the term tankie I don’t think I can do better. It’s basically people who support authoritarian communism including denying or supporting their crimes like the Tiananmen Square massacre and similar. As the last part explains, sometimes the relationship to Marxism gets lost as they focus on anti-Western or anti-American positions, such as defending Islamist Iran and other Islamist movements that share very little with Marxism and the left.

I don’t know if it’s possible, but I would guess democracy based communism with no human rights abuse. Maybe that’s better called social democracy or democratic socialism. For example, in Europe many former Soviet communism supporters lost their faith when they progressively learned about Stalinism crimes and founded what’s called “Socialist” parties as opposed to “Communist” (ex: French or Spanish socialist parties). In English, they are usually called social democrats, close to people like Bernie Sanders, I think.

I don’t know if this dev is fascist I have not studied the question. Do you have some other information besides this list? Indeed, I’m not calling the dev a tankie, but rather some of the instances of the blacklist that I know of, as a possible explanation for being blacklisted. I don’t know all of them well enough to tell.

This reminds me that there’s a France based marketplace specialized in refurbished electronics called Back Market. I had some good deals with it some years ago, I haven’t used it recently because I’m too far.

Some of those tankie instances have been pretty aggressive with others, so I can understand that a developer wants to make its project more accessible to normal people by blocking them. Now, do all the instances on this list deserve it? I don’t know. Also, it would probably be a better compromise to have this as a visible “safe default” and let admins edit it easily.
