No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Whats your dedicated eReader device and what are its killer features in your view?English
1·1 day agoThat picco is really cute! Maybe a smidge too small for me, but I like how they are thinking.
Anywhats, what I really wish for is a Boox phone.
I kind of have that too. It has some slightly rough edges but I’ve mostly been happy with it. Bit of a long story to how I ended up with both of these, but I love it. It’s so refreshing to be able to use it on a sunny day and I find that being black and white it discourages too much doomscrolling.
I have not tried sideloading books to the hibreak, I actually mostly use it as a phone. But I suspect it would be fine. Note that there’s a bit of fiddling you need to do (with some excellent and granular provided controls) to get some android apps to look good on it, but I’ve mostly been really happy with it.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.ca•Whats your dedicated eReader device and what are its killer features in your view?English
3·1 day agoSome ebook readers, IIRC Amazon and maybe Barnes and Noble (when they had them) restrict sideloading by reducing the amount of storage that can be used for sideloaded books or other restrictions.

3·1 day agoI have a boox palma 2. For me the killer feature is the size. It being phone sized, I take it more places and read more often with it than other ebook readers I’ve had.
I’ve also had a few Kobo devices, and loved them all, but for me a phone sized ereader has turned out to be the sweet spot. Since you mentioned it, it does have warm/cool backlight controls.
Kobo and Boox both place no restrictions on sideloading of books FWIW.

1·6 days agoI disagree that 5 was bad for most of its run. I think it was at about version 5.13 that I switched to it, having originally been a gnome 2.x user who hated Gnome3, but found KDE4.x unusable, and I’ve never regretted it a single time.
I’d struggle to remember any problem I have had with my system that I’d lay at the feet of KDE 5.
I’m not suggesting it’s perfect and I’m sure some folks did have issues, but I never got the feeling I was one of a lucky few having a good experience with KDE5. KDE 4 - yes that was a frustratingly bad desktop experience, and I think it was widely regarded as such. But I strongly disagree on painting KDE5 with the same brush.

224·22 days agoI don’t have the sociological definition of racism at my fingertips, but IIRC it includes the need for a power imbalance, which is generally why people push back when folks say that minority groups can be racist against against white people. Our entire country was (arguably still is to a large degree) set up to where there is a huge power imbalance in favor of white people.
If you just want to make the very real point that white people are victims of bigotry also sometimes, rather than get into this repetitive debate about whether there can be racism against white people, IMO you can just say “bigotry” or “racial prejudice” and carry the same message you intend to without having to have this tired debate about whether white people can experience racism.
Unless you aren’t tired of the tired debate, but I know I sure am.
