Europe@feddit.org•Utrecht to start construction on largest car-free neighborhood in the country next week
5·8 days agoWell… Not quite, unfortunately. A heavily car-centric right-wing party has been the ruling party here for decades now. Fortunately, they know trying to get rid of our bicycle culture would be bad for votes.

2·8 days agoThanks for writing all this! I have to mention that @notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com argues that weather is not (or should not?) be a big factor in infrastructure choices around bicycles, though:

Europe@feddit.org•Utrecht to start construction on largest car-free neighborhood in the country next week
5·9 days agoI’m not sure! It’s not just Utrecht, the Netherlands as a whole has arguably the best bicycle infrastructure in the world.
There is a very successful “Fietsersbond” (bicyclists’ union) that’s been around since the fifties, I believe, which probably helped. And the country is very flat, though that shouldn’t be an excuse for cities.
I suppose in the past we must’ve had quite progressive governments, too. Though these days the biggest centre-right party would rather form a coalition with nazis than anything left-wing…

33·9 days agoI live in Utrecht… I sometimes see how it is in car-centric countries. It really is a relief to come back home. I don’t even have a driver’s license, I use my (folding) bicycle+public transport for everything.

Linux@programming.dev•The state of Linux music players in 2026
4·9 days agoWhat a nice article. I use Kodi as my music player, or rather my multimedia center. My PC is hooked up to a 7.1 surround amplifier and my TV and I basically run Kodi all day.
Perhaps it would be more power efficient to use something else if I’m only playing music, though. I used to use MPD.

Still, it’s good to know there’s at least some open source effort for this device. Better than nothing…

Games@lemmy.world•Day 558 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing
2·10 days agoSomething I noticed when reading your excellent posts is that you don’t capitalize your i’s. I have no opinion on whether you should or not, but it did get me thinking—the English language has always seemed a bit interesting to me in that regard. It’s the only language I know that does this.
German capitalizes all its nouns, and lots of languages capitalize God and “You” if they’re talking about Him (not me though atheist fuck as I am), but only English capitalizes “I”. Almost seems a secular statement, if I didn’t know better 😅
A locked down Linux system on a device you own and paid for sounds like it should be a crime 😑
Lemmy (or in my case rather, Mbin) is increasingly all I need. And I love that.

13·10 days agoWow, very interesting. But being able to root it is pretty much a must, for me. I wonder if this will give users that freedom.

I’ve come to the point where I don’t think I could use the “normal” method if I tried. This site is a gem. I also enjoy the different lacing methods that are listed,

Isn’t this just an amazing shot.
