I think you’re being too black and white. The purpose of all this society shit isn’t to have laws that are justly applied - it’s to (ideally, late stage capitalism is fucking is here) provide the best life we can to as many people as we can. Being murdered, robbed or a bundle of other things fucking sucks so we use the law to guarantee (again, suckinh at this right now) safety and stability.

If someone did a little asshattery I don’t want to start a civil war - as a parallel, if someone runs a red light and we could either let them go unpunished or start a high speed chase, I’m going to favor the former. There is a line somewhere, there is some amount of petty treason someone could commit and some quantity of armed fanatics backing them where I’d say “we should just not risk it.”

Can you clarify if you’re looking at a field where background checks are mandatory (like security) or one where the employer is voluntarily running one? In the latter case, brokers are usually cheaper and more common, in the former it may be mandated to go through a specific government entity i.e. county/state/province law enforcement - often times that will be dictated by contracts with clients, sometimes laws.

I understand your pain - the real reason for that is that PHP was the first “hobbyist” programming language so a lot of self trained folks built websites that ended up slowly morphing into successful businesses.

One of the things I’m actually most proud of from the PHP community is that around 5.2 the maintainers looked around and saw sites like Quora and StackOverflow were littered with the worst fucking PHP advice endorsing functions like mysql_query and ill-advised features like magic_quotes so the community invested a lot of resources in purging answers that preached anti-patterns and replace them with non-terrible answers.

I work in PHP and it’s perfectly serviceable now, we’ve got strict typing, namespaces, lambdas, all the nice shit you’d expect in a modern language.

Except that Biden looks great - far more young voters will be peeved over the GOP blocking this than would have actually benefitted from the policy. “Biden tried to forgive your loans but the GOP just had to block it in the courts” - it might make Biden look somewhat incompetent but it mostly just makes Republicans look like they hate young people who are struggling.

PHP and C are both fine languages, they have their strengths and their weaknesses. They’re tools and if you feel the need to shit on them then you clearly need more practice using a diversity of languages.
