It’s been reported that in the German elections, a far right party has made ‘significant gains’.
In the UK (at least before the scandals) Reform UK seems to have had a significant boost and has even surpassed the right-wing Conservative Party in some polls/predictions.
Even France, one or two years ago, was threatened with a far-right government due to the French far right party gaining a lot of support.
It feels like in the last few years, the far-right has exceeded itself and had a surge in popularity. Is this the case? And if so, wtf is fuelling it?
You had a rise in conservative movements starting in the 1970’s as the post war economic boom stopped. The dismantling of various government services had short term benefits and long term costs. We’re at the point where these groups are trying to cling on as it is becoming more apparent that new government economic intervention is needed for most people. A lot of wealthy people don’t want to pay for this.
You also have new industries which formed and were very lightly regulated. Those who want to improve the economy also seem to want to institute effective regulation of these industries. Since typical conservatism has collapsed, the far right is being supported.
