Counter-claim: humans ARE good. Look the fuck around and see all the acts of everyday kindness.
It’s just that horrible people have what it takes to come to power. And, by extension, they know full well that if they shift the blame and make people think bad of each other, they’ll never organize against their true enemies.
I think you’re missing the forest for the trees. I have a neighbor, the sweetest kindest old lady ~60, she volunteers donates great house for trick or treaters all that.
Her whole career is working for insurance companies and denying healthcare claims. However much kindeness she shows on the weekends, she works 50 hours a week fucking over sick people.
That’s the rot in america just a couple of inches beneath the veneer of “goodness” we paint on ourselves.
And I, just today, had my neighbors giving away a perfectly good computer chair they could probably sell for a nice bonus, simply in the spirit of kindness and being good neighbors.
They are a couple, the man works in local firm’s IT department, and his wife works in the government clinic. They recently had her mom move in with them because she started to show signs of Alzheimer’s and they now think what they should do next. They are kind people, and help both their close ones and other people through their work.
You can always find saints and sinners. But the point is, overall, people act in what they consider good, one way or the other. Sometimes, people don’t recognize some sort of evil, or slip here or there - we all do. But being kind to each other is in the nature of things, and the best we can do is to notice and cultivate it further. Nothing good comes from treating others like evil bastards.
