Its pretty clear they are engaging in brigading tactics like forum sliding. Instead of engaging with content you dislike, you post a bunch of other shit to push it off the front page. Mostly an image board tactic but it still sort of works on reddit.

My personal theory is that the popularity of Bernie phonebanking campaign on Reddit in 2015-2016 really marked a new phase where state actors and corporate interests began to flood the site to sway public narrative and to subtly advertise their products through community engagements.
