The general issue with actions like this is that you expend political capital. You can build political capital in a lot of ways, but many of Trumps actions burn through it rather than build.

Why this matters is that the USA benefits from being a/the world leader, but that can only continue while other countries want that. Once the US shows itself to be unreliable or obstructive countries will look to places like China instead. So short term gains, long term costs - just like how many companies in America act.
