Remember jellyfin and other ones are free. Don’t get sucked into Plex when they will eventually raise its prices yet again.

That is quite a price hike on lifetime… going from $119 USD TO $249 USD…

I’ve been running a personal server for years. Buy the lifetime pass now if you host a server. It’s so easy.

There’s also Jellyfin for those who despise spending money and prefer to control access in their own way.

Setup a personal VPN/mesh network like Tailscale, Wireguard, etc, and it’s no longer remote playback.

Wait I thought Plex was a program to use like Kodi for your library, it offers streaming as well or something? I’m so behind, but far enough behind I’ve digitized a library of crap that I didn’t assume my file viewer needed a subscription to go with it.

Saw some features like dimming the lights, well my light is literally above my head, if I don’t want it I can reach up. If I don’t want to reach up it’s not worth paying for.

It’s like kodi, but does offer a number of features that either make it better or easier to use than free alternatives.

One of the main things is simplifying streaming outside your local network. But they also do things like auto-subtitles, skip intro, integration with some other streaming services, account management, etc.

That being said, that may not be enough for people to warrant the price.

Do I need a Plex Pass AND a Remote Watch Pass?

No. To stream personal content remotely from a Plex Media Server, you only need one of the following:

The admin account for the Plex Media Server has an active Plex Pass Your account has an active Plex Pass Your account has an active Remote Watch Pass

From the blog post it looks like users that share should be fine so long as the server host has an active Plex Pass account. Link

Sweet, thanks. I have a lifetime pass, but my family are luddites and can’t be expected to pay for access to the family photos and videos.
