Anticommunists give Soviet urban planning a lot of shit, but with regular maintenance they seem to be great places to live. Sturdy houses with lots of green, walkable, social services, stores and recreation nearby and great public transport connections. In my city they just build new neighborhoods without including anemities and public transport options
I went to Latvia and had spent several days living in the much hated commie blocks. They could use some upkeep for sure but the entire area was green with parks, playgrounds, shops, water, benches, gardens etc. Public transport nearby which would have you in the city center in no time. They beat every single urban design out there, 60 years after being build.
Pretty impossible to beat development that prioritized user comfort over market value profits yadayada. I hope to see more of that in my lifetime. Still gives me the warm fuzzies to see a well built public service building.
