There’s a definite thing in speedrunning/high score competition where once you’ve been at or near the top the temptation to cheat gets a hundred times stronger. It’s a combination of feeling like you’re owed because of how much work you’ve put in, not wanting to give up your spot to the new person climbing the rankings, and in some cases the need to maintain your top spot in order to keep getting speaking engagements and other forms of income. Billy has almost certainly felt the pressure from all three of those factors.
