Valeriano Orobón Fernández, born on this day in 1901, was a Spanish anarcho-syndicalist theoretician, trade union activist, translator, and poet who wrote the lyrics of the revolutionary song “A Las Barricadas”.

Orobón believed in the organizational power of unions, believe that they would have a major role in reorganizing society in a more libertarian fashion. Orobón was also strongly opposed to the communist (i.e., Soviet) ideas in Spain during the Spanish Civil War.

Shortly before his untimely death from tuberculosis, Orobón wrote the words of “A Las Barricadas” to the tune of “Warszawianka 1905 roku”, itself a well-known Polish revolutionary song. The anti-fascist tune became the anthem of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), and one of the most popular songs of the Spanish anarchists during the Civil War.

Went to a local meeting of the German left party (Die Linke) today. Was super worried that it was gonna be a bunch of zionist libs. After all the topics on the schedule were discussed and everyone was standing outside the building and chatting, I kinda hesitantly asked the guy I was talking to about where everyone was at on Israel/Palestine (The age range was like 20-70).

In response, he went over to the oldest guy around and asked him “Why can’t Germany be normal about Israel?” and this 70-year-old German grandpa started ranting about apartheid, genocide, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, censorship of pro-Palestinian voices in Germany, everything.

You have no idea how relieved I was. For the first time since October 7th I was hearing other German people acknowledge that Israel is a genocidal apartheid state. No “We have to support them because of our country’s history”, no “It’s complicated”, no “But October 7th”, no “But Khhamas”. This Syrian guy told me that his family comes from a town in the Golan Heights and how people with German and Syrian citizenship aren’t allowed to travel to Israel so he can’t visit his hometown anymore.

I feel a little less insane after 18 months of nonstop propaganda. So happy that the local lefties aren’t just radlibs. The old grandpa later told a story about how one of his comrades farted in a cop’s face at some protest back in the day. Not everyone in this country is a lost cause.

Your message is very relieving. After years of busting my ass to prepare to move westward, with Germany always having been an option, I’ve been pretty disgusted by the news coming from there. The US has been more brazen but I’m not nearly as disappointed in them.

A few of my friends in Germany are basically staying mouth shut about any real issues because they’re scared they’ll lose their visas. Hell, one of them has citizenship now and he’s afraid to speak up about anything. Or even order a specific book online for me lest it get him on a list.

And I’m just from Lebanon, I’m not Palestinian or Golani like the guy you mentioned. I’m implicitly associated, but not implicitly guilty by birth. You’d think Germany of all places would know better.

Haha no, it feels like Germany wants to convince everyone (including itself) that it was actually the Arabs who committed the Holocaust.

Do you need a specific book ordered from Germany? If you still need help with that I might be able to help you out
