McCarthy is not a prisoner of his party’s most reckless extremists. He is a prisoner of his own cowardly inability to marginalize them by reaching across the aisle.

McCarthy’s problem is that he needs those reckless extremists to maintain his majority and they know it. McCarthy also is running into a problem where he can’t bring House Democrats on board without losing House Republicans.

Let’s not forget that it took 15 tries to get McCarthy as House Speaker, which definitely required the “Congress Crazies”.

But the Republicans House majority is fairly thin. McCarthy could say that it’s time to work across the aisle to get the business of the nation done. If you strip Freedom caucus members of all power and committee assignments it might be doable.
