I’m neutral with it.
A meta-search engine is a search tool that sends user queries to selected search engines and returns the result
I don’t know the cost of Waterfox to send the queries to the search engine providers. I’m afraid that the ad income can’t cover the cost
If you want to support European search you are better off either using Mojeek (they have their own index) or Qwant/Ecosia (who are building their own engine).
Waterfox Private Search is a meta-search engine
isn’t a “metasearch engine” something that aggregates results from multiple search engines, like what SearXNG does? as far as I can tell, this one is a proxy that is going to let you choose between Google, Bing, Brave and Mojeek, and currently only the first one is available. it’s more akin to Startpage or Mullvad Leta, then.
What’s the difference between this and Duck Duck Go?
Waterfox has sold its users out before. DDG hasn’t (as far as I know)
The fact that Waterfox sold themselves to a search/advertising company before, then mysteriously became “independent” again doesn’t inspire trust. I’ll stick to Librewolf.
As they say:
“If we can’t generate enough revenue through privacy-respecting ads and subscriptions to support these costs, we may need to reconsider our approach.”
Well, duckduckgo is not that clean either. https://www.techradar.com/news/duckduckgo-in-hot-water-over-hidden-tracking-agreement-with-microsoft
Why is this being advertised on Buy European if they are shady as fuck and use US search engines underneath?
Using US search engines underneath is what almost all search engines do, including Ecosia and Qwant. Until next year at least, when they will hopefully finish their own search index.
Otherwise, valid question
God damn it. What FF version would you recommend using on mobile?
