Dunno about Islam, but in a different/ related abrahamic religion, there was a concept of religious ‘scholars’ who focused on the letter of the scripture and were proud of their strict adherence to the law. Only human nature also meant these people were typically unable to adhere fully to the law, i.e. failed even by their definition of the law, and committed the sins of pride and hypocrisy while admonishing others for failing the standard they themselves were unable to meet.
