I know us de-googled people are in the minority but if enough of us ask for it maybe they will work with the AOSP projects and get them drivers and all that other stuff I don’t understand.
They have said that the bootloader will be unlockable. I doubt they’ll do much more than that but if it’s unlockable then the Community will hopefully get LineageOS or other ROMs working.
They already replied. Said unlocked but will void your warranty yadda yadda.
But:
The hardware drivers (especially for the built-in keyboard) may be proprietary.
So that’s a show stopper unless they provide a binary.
A closed source keyboard driver is an insane concept, why in the world isn’t it just a usb or ps/2 device internally like laptop keyboards
Their device, their rules I suppose.
If I can’t use it with an AOSP OS it’s a pass from me. Hasn’t stopped all the other handset makers from doing it though.
Typically the closed source drivers are called “Vendor/Binary Blobs”, and ROMs and AOSP is still totally possible on it.
AFAIK there’s never been a 100% FOSS Android phone. At the bare minimum the cellular modem is generally closed source. Even Fairphone. https://code.fairphone.com/projects/fairphone-4/binary-blobs-package.html
