The UK’s biggest video-on-demand services will have to follow the same rules on content and accessibility as traditional broadcasters, under new legislation being implemented.
Let’s see the Government apply those existing rules to GB News first, eh?
Why? Streamers are way bigger than GB News in terms of viewership.
Because the rules should apply to everyone, obviously.
Edit: and because GB News has been breaking them for ages now.
Seems then like there’s no real reason to block applying the rules to streamers while trying to prosecute GB news.
What I didn’t realise when writing my first comment was that GB News has already been fined for breaching Ofcom rules.
What about apply advertising regulations to youtube? That could be spicy.

They do already don’t they? There are some caveats but broadly speaking it seems you can complain to them.
Do they cover sponsorships built into videos that I am pretty sure often don’t meet UK advertising guidelines? Tbh I use sponsorblock so its years since I even saw one but I know VPNs at least used to push huge amounts of blatant false advertisement.
I’m not an expert but from this link it would appear to be covered by either the asa or the cma.
More here and new law since 2025 looks to be tougher:
As a household including members that are deaf I think Netflix will pass muster at least for the subtitles part of the requirements.
Back when cable/satellite television was popular, only mainstream channels offered subtitles as they met the threshold for this legislation. The majority of channels had no or spotty subtitles cover.
In comes Netflix and everything has subtitles. My wife and I were transformed from requiring to pirate our favourite shows to being able to put down the pirate hat and be legit.
Obviously this didn’t last long due to the splintering of streaming services so the pirate hat is firmly back on, but the subtitles on Netflix are consistently of good quality. So much so that my deaf wife prefers to use Netflix.
