They probably can’t stop fossil fuel use by themselves as it is a societal problem. Where they are damned is that they campaigned against winding down fossil fuel use claiming that the science was wrong etc. That is effectively causing malicious harm by criminally delaying action. They knew in the 1980s that this was happening and deliberately chose to lie.
