Cancer cured! Mideast peace! Now we can finally get down to important things like annexing part of another state. Got a tattoo of Texas on you? You may need a touchup.
Of course it’s not going to happen, but god, do our politicians love a pointless gesture toward an absurd idea.
The speaker of Texas’s house of representatives says he is entertaining the idea of expanding the state by annexing some New Mexico counties.
Dustin Burrows, who has been the chamber’s speaker since 2025, ordered a state legislative committee on 26 March to look into the legal and economic options to add “one or more contiguous counties” of New Mexico to the state of Texas.
The office of New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and some of her fellow state Democratic politicians summarily dismissed the idea, with Lujan Grisham’s office saying it is “not a serious proposal”.
Burrows set off the controversy by issuing an order to establish a new committee to study whether counties in the south-eastern part of New Mexico could be annexed.
For years, south-eastern New Mexico counties have pointed to political differences between themselves and the state’s capital, Democratic-led Santa Fe.
Austin is only slightly less blue than Santa Fe. A tip to Burrows: Look into the history of the State of Jefferson for how this generally plays out.
I mean, why shouldn’t we take part of Mexico.

We just want the new one.
Texas would get further with this proposal if they became their own country (again) first. Then, they’re welcome to declare war on New Mexico all they want, preferably after the next major election.
Bold of you to assume we get another major election.
With Texas gone? It does seem bold, but for a different reason than one might assume. Seems unlikely the Dems would want to give up their newfound power lol.
Dems in Texas, with vanishingly few exceptions, have no shot. We still have half a year for Abbott to call a special session to make sure Nazis can’t lose.
Texas would get further joining itself with Arkansas.
But then we’d have to come up with a new word for ArkLaTex.
You mean Texarkana?
