A widely circulated social media post purporting to belong to the tortoise’s vet has been revealed to be a hoax.

Correction 2 April: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that Jonathan had died, after the BBC along with other media outlets fell for a fake social media account. It has been updated to explain the circumstances.
Lol imagine fooling the BBC
They don’t have source checkers anymore.
They do. It’s called the public. They outsourced.
Jonathan’s exact age is unknown, but a photograph taken in 1882 shows that he was fully grown when he was first brought to the island - where he lived on the grounds of Plantation House, the official residence of the Governor of St Helena.
Experts say this suggests he was about 50 years old by that time.
Tortoises are amazing.
Goodnewseveryone: BBC uses suspicious sources for journalism but figured it out eventually. Probably, haven’t learned anything for the future and will continue using X as source
life goals

worlds oldest tortoise is definitionally always alive, there might just be a different title holder.

This is how I wish to go out
Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated
It was just a very good nap.
