This is why you avoid hp. I’ve had good luck with brother
You’ve had good luck with what, brother?
Third base!
Can you provide some context? I don’t know Who or What you are referring to :)
This made me chuckle
I love my brother laser printer. The few times i do print its still going strong. Replaced the cartridge once so far.
Most multi-function printers suck, but HPs are the worst.
I’ve taken a couple up to an abandoned reservoir and blew them to pieces with a .12 gauge.
I, too, follow the Office Space HP printer retirement plan. Shot more than a few out in the desert over the years. Cathartic.
I dunno, is it really that therapeutic when you’re shooting it?
I just don’t know if it really matches the joy of a crowbar
Less so, but we do usually smash it up pretty good at the end before recycling what’s left.
I’ll Keep that in mind for the next time I need to dispose of one.
I’ve always enjoyed the idea of fireworks…… Maybe one day.
Printers were enshittified a decade ago. They really set the standard.
Printers have been sucking for much longer than just a decade, unfortunately. That was just when you noticed.
They’re just full of clichés and stereotypes, what can you expect?
Lexmark has entered the chat.
The nice thing about Lexmark printers back in the day. Is you just bought another printer they were so cheap
Ya I’ve owned a few of them and had constant battles with them nearly every time I wanted to print something. Then I went and got a brother printer. That one has been serving me and my kids well for 13 years now with minimal fuss despite being used constantly. (It did quit once but all I had to do was reset the print counter about 4ish years ago, which looking online maxes at 15,000 prints?)
Now that Brother is starting to pull shenanigans I’m not sure what I’m going to do when it inevitably dies.
you can still buy simple USB connected monochrome laser printers brand new, just like you could 10 years ago. HP has tricked many people into buying their shitty products but you don’t have to
Keep buying those Brothers.
HP is the worst of them all. Disabling the whole multimachine because some random unidentified part no longer works is bust forcing people to replace otherwise functioning machines. I had a printer that support said could not be fixed, bit I wanted to keep using the scanner - not possible. Just buy a new one they said
Can’t they be hacked?
It depends on the model but generally no. For using the scanner only, many of them will still allow use through USB. The screen on the printer itself won’t allow you to until you replace ink or repair whatever printer fault if has. I recommend NAPS2 for PDF scanning.
How are they unhackable? People can take them apart and access the electronics, right? We know they can be changed remotely so there has to be a way.
There are too many models to reverse engineer them all (both hardware and firmware). HP has seriously invested in encryption to make sure you can only use new and genuine ink. It’s not that it’s unhackable, just that it’s impractical to do so, especially when you can easily just buy from another brand.
Epson Ecotank happy as a pig in shit user here. Bought it 5 years ago, still going strong. No bullshit cartridges just fill the tanks with ink and off it goes. Yes you don’t a little more for the printer but it pays off the first refill.
How are they for rare usage? My last ink spewer dried up after each print because I had weeks between them. Switched to monochrome laser years ago but it’s getting old and it decides to print 20 pages of garbage on every fourth print or so.
I think you’re probably fine. The inks themselves have a 2 year expiration date, but AFAIK that’s just a typical “Quality assured until” date. I’ve not heard any issues with long spans between prints, so long as it’s plugged in so it can do a bit of maintenance.
Mine is going strong with the ink that came with it. Around five years too.
Probably epson is going to enshittify the model, because they’re not making any money off of me (because their shit is actually working)
HP on the other hand will never see a cent from me again, so keeping me happy will probably still pay off for Epson in the long run.
