I got my 13 a few months ago and it kind of sucks if I waited I could have gotten the 13 pro instead. However I won’t throw it all away or sell it to buy the pro even though I could. I’m planning on upgrading one part a year (or whenever they break), starting with the keyboard cover, to get to the pro. What are your plans?

My 13 is less than a year old, so I don’t need to upgrade anything. But that sweet haptic trackpad is very tempting.
I guess I’ll upgrade the bottom chassis when my battery dies in a few years.

I want to learn German and am currently on the brittish tyoecover so I figured I’d upgrade to the german one. I also just want the best and coolest laptop but I’ll do it patiently in an eco-friendly way
Why ? there will be a better model again eventually, so why not just use your current model until it cant do what you want anymore and THEN start the upgrade process
I have an old MS Surface Pro 7+ with LMDE. I use it infrequently and it does all I need, when it can’t, my plan is to go to a Framework 13x
You’re right, I only need the keyboard updated and thats all until something stops working.
My 13 is a couple of years old now, but it’s still trucking along just fine. My top three complaints were battery life, the trackpad, and sub optimal speakers - all addressed with the bottom chassis kit. When the battery needs replacing or when the trackpad holding bracket bends/deforms again - I’ll buy the bottom kit and move everything into that. Then someday I’ll go for a new monitor and main board etc. But not now.
This is basically me. Got my 13 least year. I won’t be upgrading until I’m forced to, most likely. When I do it’ll be those components first. Though I do covet the touchscreen, I don’t actually need it
Touchscreens on laptops are imo the most overrated things ever. If it’s a 360 flip into a tablet jobber - then the touchscreen and a pen make sense. But jabbing a finger in a screen instead of using a quality touchpad - blasphemy! :)
Been rocking a FW12 with no plans to upgrade or replace any time soon. It’s perfect for meetings and travel. Though this thread is probably asking folks that use the 13 as a daily driver.
I did just order a FW desktop to replace an old custom build, because desktop is my daily driver.

I bought my FW13 a couple months ago.
It’s been rock solid, yeah battery life could be better, but I don’t want to drop $300-$500 USD on chassis parts, keyboard, and whatever else just to upgrade my battery.
Plus I want to see real world comparisons/reviews of the Ryzen 300 vs latest Intel. Like, would I get better battery life just buying the Intel board? Is there even a reasonable performance uplift to upgrade?
Personally I might just buy the new input cover to get the new haptic trackpad, but I see zero reason to upgrade anything else, unless something just breaks. But the laptop has been solid! Zero regrets.
I have an OG one (Aug 2021) that ive upgraded to the AMD board years back. I am still pretty happy with its performance so ill hold off on the board and screen. However I do want the new bottom upgrade so I will be getting that for trackpad and speakers. I will also get a new CNC top cover because at this point mine is all dented now.

Is there a alternative that does have negative reputation that has similar views on right to repair and interchangeability and upgradability if components? I’m needing on that I can upgrade and repair on my own because I’m a poor American with little to no options.

They’ve funded DHH, a
BritishDanish white supremacist, creator of ruby on rails and omarchy. They gave material support (hardware) to him and their argument was basically that it didn’t go directly to him but to an organization he was a part of - they obscured this on the sponsorships page and idt omarchy’s sponsorship was ever even addedNow it turns out they give money to a conference he made because he got banned from the original ruby on rails community for causing problems there
They couldn’t even come out and say that they dont hold those views, threw a hissy fit on social media and then slightly adjusted their sponsorships page

- We will not support this person or their projects financially due to their controversial views
- We will be more careful about selecting sponsorships in the future

Dude named Nirav Patel explained that his approach to making electronics is informed by his growing up in an immigrant family, which “had to be thrifty” (in one of their videos on their YT cca 2024). How likely is it that such a dude is a white supremacist? Or was he supposed to be a Hindutva supremacist?
If he was a supremacist, how likely would he be advancing that agenda by retweeting a rice by DHH — a minor figure on the sidelines — sending him a laptop, and sponsoring a local DHH-affiliated Ruby event with relatively modest $20K?
Much more probably, they randomly threw some money around free software and only later figured out who DHH is.
He also clearly distanced himself personally from such views:

He funded the projects of a person who holds those beliefs multiple times and has not denounced DHH’s beliefs when questioned. Saying you are pro immigrant and pro lgbt is not a counter to working with and funding someone who wants those people gone.
It doesnt matter if he isn’t personally a white supremacist if he chooses to KNOWINGLY work with and FUND them over the concerns of others in the community. Big tent is stupid. If a nazi walks into a bar, announces theres a nazi, and you do not kick them out, that is a nazi bar. If they found out later that he was a white supremacist, the first thing they should have done was stop funding, apologize for funding him and not knowing about his views, say that they do not agree with those views and they are not welcome, and that they would be more careful in the future.
We only got bits and pieces of that after the community complained. Giving a nazi money, then when it is found out saying “well, we have a bit tent ideology,” then later after getting flak for it saying “well actually I’m pro- the things the nazi hates” is not very inspiring. A company that actually cares would admit the fault and fix it, not try to brush it under the rug.

So why don’t you do all of us a favor, and redirect that struggle session shit to any of the AI companies, or the suppliers pivoting to cater to them, or the surveillance-tech, or Alex fucking Karp in particular — all of whom are materially making our world worse and are much closer to actual fascism — and away from an OK-ish little electronics manufacturer that is doing quite all right for the narrow purpose that they have?
Framework seem happy to invest in the Omarchy and Hyprland projects. Omarchy is run by someone who pushes fascist agendas such as white nationalism, transphobia and eugenics. Hyprland is run by a developer who has been banned from freedesktop.org for failing to moderate the Hyprland community Discord and prevent abuse from there.
Edit: I corrected misinformation stating the maintainer of Hyprland pushes fascist talking points. I don’t have evidence of that.
