Rat/mouse games

  • Ratopia, survival and city building of cute rats
  • Whiskerwood, city builder with rats under the oppressive thumb of cats, choose if you’ll appease or start a revolution
  • Ratropolis, roguelite, tower defense, city-building, and deck-building with rat citizens again
  • Rocket Rats, tagged Survivors-like
  • Rat Trap, tagged Metroidvania and Puzzle Platformer
  • Small Saga (play as a mouse seeking revenge against the god who stole his tail, turn-based RPG
  • Ghost of a Tale (mouse in medieval world only populated by animals)

This list only exists because I answered some questions on Games in which you play as an animal (or colony / group)? and coincidentally ended up remembering (or later finding on Lemmy) a lot of games that happened to have rat or mouse protagonists.

Credit to commenters on https://lemmy.zip/post/63440777 for the two mouse ones, and on https://lemmy.zip/post/37620082 for some rat ones

    • Bad Rats: the Rats’ Revenge — we’re allowed to suggest terrible games, right?
    • Moss and Moss: Book II — VR third-person adventure, though I guess you’re really playing as a separate character from the mouse
    • Sunderfolk — co-op tactics combat with a tiny hint of tabletop RPG influence. One of the playable characters is a jerboa. Does that count?
    • Rules & Rodents — grid-based puzzles where you set the rules for how enemies move
    • MOUSE: P.I. For Hire — boomer shooter with a noir theme and art style from the golden age of animation
    • Mina the Hollower releases this year. It’s a top-down action game styled like it’s from a Game Boy Color.
    • Pipsqueak! is not released but there is a demo. It’s a pixel art metroidvania.

This game featured in my wife’s and my becoming close to each other. I would say heavily, it felt so at the time, but when I was getting to know her every emotion seemed heavy - good and bad. Realistically, she and our kid are two of the best things to ever happen to me, but this game probably didn’t have much to do with it.

I remember that if you, the mouse, got caught by the cat, you’d turn into not the traditional “less than three” heart, but something that more resembled an ampersand and angled bracket. I am very sleep deprived and can’t find a screenshot or video supporting that, but I will adamantly defend the claim, even if I find out it was an invented memory.

My wife, who always liked to be different, would say &> to express her affection when we met. At the time, I told her all of the above (probably in a more abbreviated manner) and, to this day, when we want to say “I love you,” we’ll sometimes say “mouse hearts” instead. Wouldn’t work with anyone else, probably, but then again, I don’t want it to.

DarkMouse. Didn’t play it but I have it on my radar because something about it speaks to me. Has good reviews.

    Simple looking top down soulslike.

Ghost of A Tale is a fantastic game. Really cool little fantasy world they created. Great art direction.

Bad Rats, but it’s really crappy. The kind of crappy where I watched more than one episode of let’s play “bad Rats” because it was fun to watch.
