They just forced the 10 commandments into every classroom in the school I work with.
It absolutely galvanized the student body, they hate it and are forming different opposition groups.
I hope that was the religious movement’s goal, get everyone to hate them.
It is. Being “persecuted” is a requirement of their faith, so they have to manufacture it.
They never see past the next move.
It’s their belief that forcing it down peoples throats is gods work and they have the moral high ground.
It’s not for the people there today, it’s for the kids a generation from now.
One problem with Christian morals is that God was immoral in the Bible. He told the Hebrews to attack people and commit genocide. He told them to kill every man woman and child. He specified that infants and sucklings were to be killed. When David sinned, he punished him by killing his son and having ten of his wives raped in public, he sends bears to attack children, he almost makes Ezekiel eat bread cooked with human shit, but is persuaded to allow cow shit instead.
So you read “You shall not kill” and think that’s a pretty good moral, but then you read God saying he is going to kill everybody and have pregnant women ripped open and their babies dashed against rocks. There’s not many ways to reconcile that except to say he’s God, he can do whatever he wants.
That opens up the idea that, if you’re doing what god wants, you can probably get away with a lot of shit too. If you steal from this elderly person, you’ll put the money to good use, so god would want that. If you lie and cheat, well, you’re on mission from God and you gotta break eggs to make an omelette.
Morals are flexible to God, so if you get your morals from God they’re flexible for you too. And if not, it’s ok, you just get forgiven anyway.
I’m guessing the Christian argument would be exposure. Those in church get taught morality. Not everyone in school goes to church. They can force everyone to hear it.
That said, if you need the threat of hellfire to be moral or good, are you really moral or just performative?
These people believe in moral dessert, do good things and good things will happen to you. It’s bonkers nonsense but a lot of people will break if they confront their own mortality and brief existence.
Excellent litmus test!
Less people go to church so they need to diversify the brainwashing locations.
While I don’t want God in schools in that sense, either (other than teaching about the world’s different religions and belief systems, for instance), one of the central parts of most religions is morality. Are there many churches that gloriously fuck it up? Yup. But there are also many churches that do it pretty well. So in the end, there are plenty of churches that do probably improve morality. They’re just generally not the ones that make the headlines.
Religion having a say in morality is fundamentally problematic
Personally I’ve never met a single self professed Christian that I would have considered a good person. So headlines or not, I have my doubts there.
That’s because Christians who actually understand the religion they’re following understand that just presenting themselves as Christians don’t make them good people. I know plenty of Christians who are amazing people. They just won’t shove it into your face as such.
What bugs me the most is when someone says “I’m/he’s/she’s Christian” as a short-hand way of saying, “I’m/he’s/she’s a good person.” Much like the cyclical argument that their bible is divine because the bible says it is, instead of using their actions to demonstrate their morality, they fall back on a singular label that only works if you already believe the premise that Christian = good.
Which is why when someone says “I’m Christian” as a defense of their morals, all I hear is, “I’m hiding behind my faith because I have no other evidence to prove I’m a good person.”
They say it to mean “good person”
We hear “liar and rapist, probably a pedophile”
Hard agree.
Churches became a thing because people couldn’t read. They’re still around because people refuse to read.
That said. There hasn’t been a single decision in my life that I couldn’t figure out by thinking “well what if it happened to me”
If you need to be scared of mystical jealous ex to make moral decisions, you’re in the wrong spot.
I have met 1 couple who did. The parents of a friend of mine when younger. They would give you their shirt if you were cold. The father retired after a career in business accounting and decided to go around to churches helping them handle their finances to best help people. He will would not assist any church which was on tv or radio. Whole idea was stuff like what type of bank accounts to use for most return but having enough liquid to help people today. How do you track all money people give in tithes? You want to offer free lunch to all who come to service on Sunday to help the less fortunate, will that impact your ability to offer temporary housing for those who are sleeping on the street?
I’m not religious but they were and we’re great people.
Personally i dont like religions and if there was some greater power out there, i think they would not need some random church as an antenna to reach me.
That being said your take is the most moronic and anectodal i have heard in a some time.
I mean it weights just as much as somebody saying “All the jews i have met were greedy.” or “All the mexicans i have met were lazy”
Dont you consider Mr. Rogers as a good person? He was an presbyterian minister.
Or Florence Nightingale? The woman who basically created modern nursing and hospital sanitation. She was a devout cristian.
What about Stephen Curry? He is very openly christian and beside basketball, is known for humility, charity work, and community programs.
What about Dolly Parton, Simone Biles, Jeremy Lin, Neal McDonough? All bad persons?
Those are just few celebrities, there are good and bad persons from every religion, race and country out there.
