A thread for talking about the local, Scottish and Senedd election disaster results.

The Guardian has a live updating page where you can search for your council (or any other council you’re interested in).

How are we all feeling? Depressed? Terrified? Vindicated? For me, I see no reason to change my view that Starmer should have resigned months ago. I’m also hoping Anas Sarwar goes with him (granted I’m writing this before the Scottish results have come in, I just think he’s a dickhead).

I’m reluctant to comment on it lest I jinx it, but I never imagined the Labour and Conservatives would be 3rd and 4th.

I’m hoping this rattles the government enough to propose something other than first-past-the-post for the next general election, if only to save themselves.

This is very disappointing. I just don’t understand why would someone with a sane mind vote for reform.

Predictable that Labour were trounced but god that’s a depressing amount of wins for Reform. Fucking Nigel Cunt is going to be next PM isn’t he.

I feel that today I’m going to be alternating between laughter and depression as people continue to demonstrate they don’t understand how block voting works, and that infighting only benefits the other block.

Green on red leading to blue, etc.

Well, good game Britain. I thought there was some hope after getting the Tories out, but Starmer was the best the “left” could do and now the country is fucking doomed.

Anecdotally lots of young people (who are mostly green voters) either missed registration or voting because there wasn’t enough awareness. General elections are a much bigger deal so the results will likely be different. Another change will probably be that with an increased number of green councillors there’s a better base to organise.

I think we can also get a lot more volunteers for the general election as a result and hopefully influence things more. It’s also exam season for a lot of students (who are like half the volunteer force at any given time) so the greens weren’t able to really exert their full influence.

i.e. there’s hope yet, go engage with the real world and bring others with you instead of inhabiting the manufactured reality of the corporatised internet

This isn’t a general election. It’s a partial local election in England. In Scotland and Wales it’s local + devolved governments.

I’m aware. I don’t see anyone but Reform getting elected in the coming general. The only real candidate in my view is Polanski and you’ve seen what the media are doing to him; It worked with Corbyn and as a result I don’t believe my former countrymen are smart enough to see through it this time either.

I reiterate, the country is fucking doomed. Downvote away, I would love to be wrong, but I’m not.

I’m not saying that Reform won’t, but I would note that while Reform saw a very large surge, the past six months has seen a very considerable downturn in polling for Reform in voting intentions for the next general election. If you are not aware of that decline, I thought I might make you aware.

That, I wasn’t aware of. Appreciated! I do hope it manages to turn around. I fear the alternative, we’ve already seen how that goes in the US.

That’s the most likely result wrt Reform winning the next GE. I don’t agree with what you’ve said, I think 2026 Green Party are dangerous, they’re no longer v the eco party of the past. I respected that position more than their current path.

I do agree we’re a bit fucked but for different reasons. Time will tell.

Sounds like you think reform are going to win the general too, so I’m not sure how you’re not agreeing with me, but okay. Like, you think the country isn’t totally buggered in the event Reform wins? Because they’ve already shown how bad they are at governing, in the localities they’ve won seats in. Or, are you saying you think people are smart enough to see the smear campaign against Polanski for what it is? Because I’ve worked in IT too long to believe that myself.

I think the country has been up shit creek for years, pre-Brexit. Your statement can be used against you: look how bad the Greens governed their only cojncil. They didn’t even implement proper recycling in 10 years.

Polanski is a populist helmet saying what do-gooders want to hear. As I said, Greens of 2026 are on a mad path.

If that’s true, then there’s really no hope. I’d try to fix it myself but I don’t live in the UK anymore. I did try to convince some of my family but they want to be a researcher and a nurse, respectively, so they dismissed the idea of getting into politics 😅 Best I can do is hope for a miracle, I suppose.

I thought there was some hope after getting the Tories out,

what fucking hope? The results of the last election was basically :

The tories aren’t racist bastards enough. I don’t want a brown prime minister.

Conservatives have lost 7 million votes and 300 seats, Reform have gained 7 million votes and 2 seats.

What did you guys think was going to happen in local elections where not as many young, progressive and left wing people vote?
