I tried reading the wikipedia article on it, but tbh I’m insanely illiterate when it comes to digital stuff. What makes a digital RMB different to RMB on a bank account or even a physical RMB note?

I don’t know how it works exactly. But it’s different from RMB in the bank account because the Digital RMB itself is the currency. So if you have Digital RMB on whatever device it works on, it does not represent RMB being held a bank account.
Normally if you transfer money to me digitally, it has to be facilitated by the bank in one way or another. But you can theoretically transfer Digital RMB that you have on your phone to mine without needing an internet. So it is like physical RMB but digital.
