The option is greyed out, YET checked. I cannot change it at all.

How do I force Firefox to uncheck it? I feel like a boomer asking this, but…

I tried using the about:config to put the boolean of

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.system.trendingSearch.enabled

to false, but nada.

What is your default search engine set to? My guess would be that the one you’re using doesn’t support it?

If so, for your sanity you could change it to, say, Google, uncheck it, then change it back?

I use Qwant (though I also use others, but for daily usage, it’s that one). Trying to get as independent as possible from anything American or owned by fascists, and less importantly, getting rid of what’s propietary and/or publicly traded.

In that case I’m fairly sure that what I described is the issue: Qwant doesn’t support trending search suggestions, so it’s great out and doesn’t do anything.

If you want to uncheck it, temporarily switch to Google, uncheck it, then switch back to Qwant.

I suggest that you should use SearXNG, It is not a single provider but multiple instances. I use it too. Its good for privacy but may not be accurate all the time
