Curious if anyone could recommend any books where the bad guys fail more by just repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot, then anything the protagonist does to try to stop them.
This is pretty close to the premise of Good Omens if I’m remembering correctly.
And a good number of other Terry Pratchett books!
A Confederacy of Dunces, maybe?
Celeterra by CP Suter comes to mind.
I would say that there’s definitely a moment like this (for a loose interpretation) in When the Moon Hits Your Eye by John Scalzi

Quite a few villains in that and they do some wacky things. Its a fun romp. I like the first book more than the subsequent ones but I enjoyed reading it.
