“Newsom does not want to tax billionaires,” said the Billionaire Tax Now campaign, “but he wants you to think he does.”

I’m no American but we’ve had guys like him in German politics a lot. Their socialism is all lip service. The moment they take office it’s thrown out the window for neoliberal BS. Newsom in particular has proven this in CA already, hasn’t he?

That duplicity in views at home versus abroad is how you know he isn’t trustworthy. He needs to explain why it works nationally but not locally.

I hate to sound like I’m defending Newsom because I think he’s a snake who only wants more power for himself, but implementing a billionaire tax at the federal level is legitimately the best way to do that kind of thing.

It’s too easy for anyone, especially obscenely rich people, to claim residency in another state. It’s much more difficult to shift your tax burden to another country. CA would absolutely lose some amount of tax revenue if they were the only state in the country with this kind of tax. No, all the billionaires wouldn’t leave, but they will certainly find the loopholes.

        Counterpoints:

        1. The CA billionaire tax was set up with rich folks possibly leaving in mind. If they’re residents on Jan 1, 2026, they’re stuck.
        2. Newsom sees it has a chance to pass in state and knows it won’t pass federally, so he’s playing games there.
        3. Rich folks were always gonna look for loopholes. Its how they stay rich.
        4. IMO less rich people then you think would leave. They don’t want to be a huge fish in Kansas, they want to be a big fish in San Fran.

He’s still a rich white guy. He just looks like a hero compared to Trump. CA can do better. He also shot down RCV.
