Yeah, it’s “AI Slop.” I don’t care. I’m looking for answers. I was watching a video that suggested Descript, so in researching that, I came across this. In further research, I’m not sure my device has enough resources to make running DaVinci feasible, especially if upgrades are delayed. But text editing a video while also being able to add various language subtitles without hand-transcription is extremely appealing, in itself.
Has anyone monkied around with any lightweight, text-based video editors you’d recommend (bonus for FOSS)?
Thanks in advance.
I saw the article mentions Audopolis. It’s FOSS, seems small, and its README says it “can automatically transcribe your audio to text” and “can be used for Video, Audio and mixed editing”.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I’m not sure if it’s merely my eyesight, or that with other factors like age, being in not too-challenging Lemmy spaces, overwhelm, etc.
Being constrained from moving my ass is brainrotting.
No worries. We all miss stuff sometimes!
Thank you for your magnanimous reply.
What kind of edits do you want to do?
Video and audio, auto-transcripts
I am not aware of any software like this. Even if a suite like this exists it won’t be lightweight just because it uses LLMs as the editing and rendering would be done on your computer and the AI will only determine what edits to perform.
For auto-transcripts there could be a dedicated tool out there that will be lightweight. But I am not aware of it. Sorry for not being helpful.
Oh it doesn’t have to be AI! I was just looking for a way to easily edit out sneezes and not hand-type transcripts for captions. I’m fairly sure something suitable exists, or perhaps expectations are about to meet reality - again. 🙃
If you want to splice out sneezes manually you can try something like openshot or kdenlive. They should be more lightweight than something like Resolve. For generating captions or transcriptions you’ll have to use some AI service.
Beautiful, thank you so very much! I’m glad I don’t have photosensitive epilepsy when I visited openshot website. 😅 But it looks pretty good, I may leave off subtitles until I master edits. Thank you again, because I was eying capcut.
Capcut should be easy right? Since it is meant for normies to create stuff for social media.
Hey, yes, from what I’m reading, possibly the easiest. I specifically said “FOSS” because (story time 😂):
Decades ago, I worked for a shady, fly-by-night website “creation” company (they plugged stuff into a CMS that basically only displayed well on two or three IE versions), and I got fairly decent with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. When I left that job and began working from home, the licenses expired before I was making enough to renew them and pay the bills. I never mastered GIMP, I don’t know whether it was because the others were so intuitive, taught me bad habits, or whatever, but I stunk, the tuts never read naturally to me, so I went to work for a shady insurance company that paid about as well but still left time for my kid and other obligations (I still suck at gimp)
In sum, I’m hoping if I take the more challenging route now, should capcut decide to yank their free version, I’ll already be well-enough accustomed to a free version of video editing software, or at least have acquired the better learning skills, to not be dependent on them, especially since I don’t know when I’m going back to work or even if I’ll be with that same company, or having to find something else. Contingency planning, in other words!
Thanks again for all your help and support. You have no idea how much that means to me, comrade. ❤️🫡
I remember when I looked this up before I came across an ancient emacs package GNEVE:

I think a way to approach this is to create a shell script which calls ffmpeg commands and other cli utilities to do video editing, this way version control is possible.
Oh hey! Thanks for the suggestion, if I could code a lick, I most certainly write a script! 🤣🤣🤣
