Edit: For context, @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com discovered that the developer of Tesseract had discretely banned numerous instances and disguised it as a server error. This included more heavily leftist instances, but also blahaj.zone. More recently, it was discovered that they had also been suppressing individual users, phrases, and communities that criticize power tripping on fedi.
Needless to say, I implore non blahaj.zone users to drop the Tesseract client (support for the client has already been dropped for blahaj). So called “liberals” like this who call out “extremism on both sides” are an insult to the values they claim to be upholding.
I have been informed that apparently all of blahaj was banned, that’s why your or my specific username wasn’t on the list. We all were :)

Lmao he even banned this
they’re even bad regexes. there’s no point putting an optional thing at either end of an unanchored non-capturing regex. 🥺👉👈 contains 👉👈. it’s like searching for “chains OR gold chains”
Only an evil person could want to ban subs.
Right?
🥺
👉👈Apparently “🥺?👉👈” is either very “extremist” or “group thinking” for that dev, lol
As a proud extremist, the only reason I’m not included is because I don’t do the extremist hand signal. 🥺👉👈 Amateur mistake I know.
Yes, the extremist group thinking of ‘i would really appreciate some headpats andmaybealittlebonustreat, ahem but mostly headpats, yes, mhm.’
🖕😉 🖕
(Directed at him, not you!)
hah it’s the first time I’m seeing an emoji regex
You know… yeah.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before either.
Me, seeing my name on this list:

Don’t forget this also works in reverse! The blocklist is also a contact list of cool people ;)
Hahaha yayyyy I made it onto the blocklist in the userregexes list. I assume this means all my alt accounts with the same name on different instances were blocked.
Man, I must be a menace
Such a total menace! /j
While sad I’m not on it, I saw every user I have a positive tag set for on there. At least I’m making some good choices.
Same, does that makes us cool by proxy?
deleted by creator
Hell yeah we do
No, that was the entire point. I’m not a cool person because I’m not on that list
I guess I’m not cool either 😔
You are cool.
You are just also broadly respectable, and a pleasant person.
I’m a brash asshole when someone pisses me off, lol, ran out of fucks to give sometime during COVID.
I do try to be a bad girl sometimes, but I guess I am more inclined towards kindness than I give myself credit for.
Really, truly, keep the kindness.
I am aware that now me is a cynical bastard compared to younger me… and I do not like that.
Whatever happens to any of us, the whole world in this … grand collapse, that is about to accelerate…
… love is the only thing that can build, after all the hate and greed has destroyed.
We really need kind people though
Mostly, but not necessarily, I noticed some people I definitely wouldn’t call cool on there
Fair, there’s always some bad apples.
TIL I’m too cool for school.
I’ll take this in stride and wear it as a badge of honor!

The blocklist is so wild. It really appears to be someone who has put a lot of work into removing any exposure to anyone who cares about literally anything. What a sad little piece of shit.
I couldn’t find the list until someone shared it
Holy crap. That list is huge. Is there anyone left to interact with? It’s not like there’s THAT many of us.
What do you mean ? There are dozens of us that are not on the list.
I’m one!!
Hehe I’n on the McCarthyist list
I dunno what “userRegexes” is, but I’m there. I’m hoping it means I’m banned!
It means that your account and any other accounts Tesseract finds with the same name as yours (the “samus12345” part) are banned.
Wait, so if I create a Lemmy account as @samus12345@foobar.com, that would automatically be blocked as being assumed to be an alt of @samus12345@sh.itjust.works?
Exactly, regex is basically the same as pattern matching in programming.
Yeah, and the dev explicitly chose to go with that assumption. Or maybe they just don’t like Metroid either way lol
I do use that name when making accounts on other instances, so it was a good assumption!
“regex” is short for “Regular Expression”, a type of program for matching characters in text. I haven’t read the actual code that uses the
userRegexeslist, but I think you’re safe to assume that it means the tesseract client was filtering your comments and/or posts.
Hey, a copyparty server in the wild! Neat!
For the nerds, another post (the one OP links to) stated that you can check the list by yourselves from the source by running the following command in the terminal:
curl -s https://tesseract.dubvee.org/tesseract/api/system/policy policy \ | base64 -d | gunzip > policy.json(Reminder to NOT RUN any commands on your terminal you don’t understand)
It’s a way much bigger PITA to do it in Windows than in Linux.
True. However, there are still many ways to do it. If anyone reading this is curious, here are a few ways:
- Find a way to run Linux commands in Windows (WSL, VirtualBox, …);
- Rewrite the command for PowerShell;
- Do it manually (visit https://tesseract.dubvee.org/tesseract/api/system/policy, either right click and do “Save As…” or copy all the text, use an online Base64 file decoder, use a tool like 7-Zip to extract the GZip, and change the extension to
txtso you can read the file with Notepad).
Yeah, I used almost exactly the last method you described.
I had to fetch the damn original list from their server, then (on my frigging Windows work PC) BASE64 decode it and gunzip it (something stupidly simple on Linux, less so on Windows).
On the upside I did get the warm feeling of finding my nick on the list.
I’m on the list! Woo!
Oh hey, my lemmy.zip account made the blocklist. Mum, look, mum, I’m quasi famous! :D
Damn, none of my accounts are on the list. Even the ones banned from .ml
Thanks! I couldn’t find the list either. I’m there.
Aww, I’m not on there. But I’m not really surprised, I don’t talk much.
Not surprising considering their instance banned activism

“identity politics”
Dude, just say “woke” or “DEI” or whatever it is other conservatives call “not being a bigot.”
Not you, OP. The guy who wrote the policy.
How dare people have opinions!!
Wait, is that an opinion? Fuck. Time to ban myself.
Let me see if I get it.
Someone maakes a Lemmy client, which function is just to interact with fediverse side if lemmy, then the developers just silently blocks everything they don’t like, probably because it’s too woke or something like that.
Why even development a client to begin with??
Nice! I’m on it, too!
Now, how do I trigger a GDPR and force them to remove my name, just to annoy the dev?
Why are people like this? This person once helped me out (kinda) for a comment rendering thing for my own client (I was unfamiliar with nested comments and how they worked with the API). It’s so sad and frustrating to see people you had non zero respect for do something so shitty like this. Like… especially for a group of people SO FUCKING CORNERED ACROSS THE WORLD. What’s the thought process behind this? So so shitty.
I seriously can’t find a thought process behind this. This is such a weird thing to do.
I think they have a grudge against Ada for being too friendly with leftist instances, and/or find the vibe too unsightly in some way. Maybe we’re too weird in ways he doesn’t like, or maybe we’re too anarchist adjacent (a lot of people on this side of lemmy are anarchists, as queer people have every reason to dislike and distrust most governments right now). Regardless, we’re too controversial of a vibe for their view a “non-toxic” fediverse.
The idea of a non-toxic fediverse is so silly. Yeah there should be a variety of experiences within it, but the whole thing about federation is that it enables us to find places that align with us.
I’m still on .world because they haven’t pissed me off enough to bother changing and they were the main ones defederated from exploding heads when I signed up. I’d probably go blahaj if I were to change these days. But like, the ability to change and to go to an instance that aligns with your beliefs in who it’s on speaking terms with is the point.
Banning blahaj and db0 won’t make the fediverse respectable, and it’s something an instance or user should do, not a moderation tool
What’s the thought process behind this?
There is no thought process. That’s the problem.
I gave up trying to understand bigotry. It’s just senseless.
The ability for humans to do bad is equal to their ability to do good. And we all do both. The best you can hope for is that they do at least slightly more good than bad over their lifetime.
I was in the OG blocklist as “garden-variety crackpot” https://github.com/paulo-roger/tesseract/blob/2b53f17a5506b7c4b3ad1d5c26af49662f03a478/src/lib/blacklists.ts#L2711-L2725
. Although I’d like to object to the “garden-variety” part, my crackpottery is artisanal.
The actual adminowner of my instance took time out of their very very busy day to present me personally with a medal for my inclusion. I shall wear it with Pride
First I was like “oh, guess I’m not active enough to be noticed”, but there’s people on the list who barely posted anything.
Guess I just didn’t manage to say something that would have annoyed this person. Like talking about burger units and shit. 🤷🏻♀️ I’m just a weird anarchy hippie nerd trans girl, don’t ban me. Oh crap I said it out loud
I’m on the list. 💅 I guess I’m too salty about the biosphere collapse.
Congrats! I’m a bit envious
I’m guessing my anger about jackboot thugs abducting and terrorizing minorities got me on there.
The funny thing, with all regex / wordlist bans, is that it will catch waay more than it is intended to. The old Scunthorpe problem. I wonder how it must feel to browse this with random words triggering the filter.
From a quick glance, this guy does not like politics, NSFW stuff, making fun of mod abuse, anime, internet speech / “reddit-isms”… this must be a very empty place then
I guess this person really likes their mother’s basement and doesn’t like interacting with anyone other than their hands. Or potentially their mother’s hands.
Roll Tide!
‘Making fun of mod abuse’
Lmfao
Yeah, WTF would you use a regex? I guess they want to filter out that user if they have another account with a slightly different name?
I’m just sad they didn’t try to hit violet with one lol
Oh wait, yes, there is no
.*violet.*in there. Weird.
the dev of Voyager has the option to do the funniest thing ever next April fools
Holy shit my username made the regex list. I have never been more proud of anything I’ve ever achieved online with my shitty fucking posts
EDIT:
"^Left(y|ie|ist)|^Anarchis(t|m)|^Tank(y|ie) ?(Humou?r|Meme|Joke|Circle|Jerk)",They’re really not trying to be subtle here now are they
They didn’t think people would see it, and tbf nobody discovered it before now.
They’re probably hoping it’ll blow over and that people will forget and forgive them for it. We can’t let that happen or they’ll do the same thing again, or worse.
Anywhere this behavior isn’t shunned will be overtaken by it
I won’t forgive them despite them flattering me
Who actually reads source code?? I only read municipal code for fun, not software.
When they have a technical issue that needs troubleshooting I guess
