RAM too. not really applicable here, but Crucial desktop RAM was on sale, 2x16 5600 MHz for only like $68 yesterday. that’s like half of what I paid for much worse RAM two years ago

Thank god i was able to snag that deal. Helps that Crucial (Micron) makes its own chips. They remove the middleman (Module makers like GSkill and Kingston) and pass the lower cost to consumers.

No no no this is trash m.2 Storage very slow and very inefficient apple uses i-storage the most state-of-the-art computer hardware ever. They’re generous to even give us the opportunity to use it.
Both solid state and mechanical drives are dropping like crazy. I picked up a bunch of 20tb enterprise drives for Black Friday and they cost what 8tb drives did just a year or two ago.
SSDs have also basically halved in prices per tb after stagnating for so long. It’s great!
I am wondering why Framework is overcharging massively for SSD’s (and RAM) when configuring laptops on their site?
For example they are asking £229 for a WD SN770 2TB SSD when you can buy it separately for £85 on Amazon!
Most laptop manufacturers overcharge on RAM and storage as it’s one of the main places they actually make a profit. Framework is not immune to this and does it too. But if the prices bother you guess what! Its framework so you can just buy whatever you want. I think of the overcharge as kinda a donation to Framework.
They ordered these much earlier and in a limited quantity, before manufacturers dropped prices
Yeah part of what Framework wants to do is keep stable prices. That means overcharge for volatile components.
For what it’s worth, I purchased one of these in October, along with some Crucial RAM for my laptop, and my laptop now cannot achieve S3 suspend. I believe the issue is this drive, but I am on a trip without a screw driver, so I can’t take it out and test.
Without reaching S3 suspend, my laptop goes from fully charged to dead in about 6 hours - I literally can’t suspend it over night. I’m running Ubuntu, but I’ve tried with several distros (booting from live USB), and so far none reach S3.
I should have access to a screw driver, and be able to test some time in the next two weeks. I’ll try to remember to update this when I do.
The drive has been great otherwise. I know people have commented about the lack of DRAM and potential performance hit, but performance has been great for me - I haven’t noticed any difference relative to my more expensive Samsung drives. I’m a photographer, and copy 10s of gigabytes to the drive at a time, and it’s handled that without issue.

I have confirmed the issue with this drive. My laptop cannot achieve s3idle with this drive in. It can with other drives, and can without any drive (booted from USB), but not with this drive. I’ve contacted Crucial support to see if it’s a known issue, or if there’s a problem with my drive. I’ll report back if I hear anything.
Prices are going up in Italy, and are nowhere near as low. $160? Try 100 euros more. :(
I snagged a SK Hynix P41 Platinum for my Framework 16 (2 TB) for €124. I hope I did well enough…
Same, got it for 108€ in germany. I think it’s a very good choice, top of the line SSD, pretty similar to the 990 Pro, a little bit slower, but also more power efficient - which has higher priority for me in a laptop (Comparison on tomshardware). The speed differences probably will never be noticeable in non-benchmarking use.

I’ve already had some people give me crap for not buying a Gen 3 instead, but all data I’ve found seems to indicate that during heavy use the performance difference with a 4x4 Nvme is noticeable, and the P41 is actually more efficient than the P31 because, while the power consumption is higher when it’s doing rw, it takes about half the time to complete said operation, and it is also much faster than the P31 to race to idle. Seems like the controller on the P41 Platinum is just very, very good for power consumption, with no known rivals (except the Solidgm P44 Pro, which has the same SK Hynix Aries controller and very similarly performing flash, but it’s €250 vs. €120, and for a margin of error difference, I won’t pay that much)

I have a theory about this, that we’re about to enter a new era of storage of RAM. Similarly to when we moved from HDD TO SSD. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next year or two we have something new.
This would be refreshing. We are currently stretching the real world usefulness of RAM because the relative speed of RAM has decreased with everything around it. RAM improvements would be most welcome IMO.
Currently, I still think it is the programs that have to catch up and get updated. Ram speeds have doubled but the speeds are not being utilized by most programs. At least thats what I’ve heard.
I don’t really think that’s coming up that soon the m.2 form factor still has room to grow. Most likely gen 5 will just become more affordable.

It’s Gen3 and also a DRAM-less drive so will choke a bit with sustained writes. The 4TB Teamgroup MP34 is the same price and is IMO a better SSD.
I got an Intel 2TB for $60, hold out a little longer.
I thought about getting a 4 tb SN850x, I have one along with a 2 tb in my desktop, but 4 in a laptop is a lot to manage at least for me, also that would require a more sizable investment to back up the entire thing when it is full which is more difficult for physically smaller and more durable drives. I also opted out from going the full 64gb of memory as at that point that may impact battery life, nor do I really have a use for that much as I’d be working with raw image files and maybe some light gaming with emulators at the most
It makes 0 difference to power consumption if you’re comparing like to like kits. What matters in ram is the voltage. Most ddr5 sodimm kits run at 1.1v whereas some of the crazy fast kits run at 1.35v.
However, the only 1.35v kits I’ve seen were XMP (which I believe framework doesn’t support at least on the AMD boards). You should be fine with whatever you go with.
While true, there are no memory kits I can find at least through pcpartpicker that are 262 pin DDR5 that run more than 1.1v

Is that even compatible with the framework? I thought it could only be the 5600 mt.
Does RAM quantity really impact power consumption in any meaningful way? I’m curious because that crossed my mind after I missed the crucial 32GB deal and opted instead for 64GB from GSkill. My SSD will be a Hynix P31 so I’ll save some battery life there at least
