There’s this “vertical map” sometimes used in China that I’m fascinated by, almost always in the left configuration but there exists a version that doesn’t cut off the Americas. It’s named the Hao projection after its inventor Hao Xiaoguang.
More commonly used in China is this, whose official name is checks notes “Latitudinally equal-differential polyconic projection”, what a mouthful…

Honestly butterfly-style maps should be the default, you can tell shape, size, position, cardinal direction all relatively well, there’s no major distortions, and Pacific-centered, Atlantic-centered, and north-down versions all work fine.
Idk why I never see it in these discussions, but somehow the “wrong aspect ratio” Gall-peters map always pops up.
With these I can’t help but cut them out and assemble them in my head.
