If you really don’t want to sign up for EhNow (which is Canadian), I added a screenshot with the info. EhNow link: https://ehnw.ca/e/s2xmHJqhTU6vvC0uHNFeZw
Edit: Alright people, here’s a new link. Don’t worry it’s not a phishing attack, it’s not spam, or whatever other horrific thing you’re assuming, you don’t have to go through the horror of creating a free account on a Canadian website, it’s all right here on Lemmy where you created a free account on a Canadian website. I am simply trying to spread the word about this protest. https://lemmy.ca/c/never51
Wow, does this ever read like a false flag. Download an app, give them you phone number, and then go cause a fuss at border crossings to “have your voice heard.” Uhuhuh

facepalm
phishing attacks? are you serious? It’s not a phishing attack.
I’m trying to spread the word about an anti-annexation protest.
You’re paranoid because there’s no O?
No, I don’t know why. I didn’t make the website, nor do I really know how URLs work. It’s a legit link though. Your paranoia is unwarranted.
I think it has something to do with linking to the app version vs the website version.
I didn’t realize people on here were THIS paranoid.
Do you think youtube links are phishing attacks when it’s a shorter version?
“this link says ‘yt’ and not ‘youtube’ clearly it’s a phishing attack.”
Just…wow.
What you call paranoia is basic InfoSec 101 training that everybody in a company must learn. If the domain name of a link or an email address has any difference with what you expect, then its most likely a phishing attack.
Also the fact that your account was just created yesterday is very suspicious. I would discourage everybody reading this to click on the links of this post.
Yeah the redirect to open in an app thats only on google play is a fun part of this too… Very suspect.
I post a screenshot of the details of the event. I post a link to this very website for the event instead of EhNow. And you’re still suspicious? of what?
Just look up what EhNow is! Its a legit Canadian social media site. There’s nothing to be suspicious about. Good lord.
I don’t know anything about an app redirect as I only use the internet on a desktop computer, but I am not understanding how that would be “suspect”
the fact that your account was just created yesterday is very suspicious.
Why?
I’m new on the site and that makes me “suspicious?”
Because I posted a link to a protest?
What am I being suspected of, exactly?
Not knowing about Lemmy before yesterday? Crime of the century.
Also, this isn’t a work email, it’s an internet forum.
I’m genuinely curious what is it that you’re so scared of? You think because I posted a link to a Canadian social media site that you’re not familiar with, it’s like a virus or something?
C’mon man.
Not posting any receipts for legitimacy and just complaining makes you look like a lazy scammer.
If you were really trying to promote stuff, you would post something that shows engagement by legitimate and verifiable sources. You aren’t.
The link could very well lead to malicious javascript or a phishing site, yes. You could be a hacker, troll, or foreign rabble-rouser. We can’t tell. And the audience on Lemmy has a lot more sysadmins, programmers, and other IT people than the average. A lot of us have had to clean up a corporate network after a ransomware attack. We’re aware of the risks of clicking on the wrong thing in a way you may not be.
The site you linked to looks suspicious because it’s unfamiliar, it shows only a login screen to anyone not logged in (and nothing at all if you visit it with Javascript off, which is a wise precaution for dubious sites if you’re going to visit them anyway). Now, granted, if you are not the owner of the site, this is not your fault. It just doesn’t help your case.
If you had a history on Lemmy, we’d have some basis for determining whether or not you were legit. Since you have none, we have to guess, and the default is to not trust people.
It isn’t that you did anything wrong, exactly. It’s just that many of us aren’t willing to take the chance.
A link to a login wall is just spam.
Using this mantra from now on.
That’s a sad excuse for a “mantra”
It’s not a “link to a login wall” It’s an event. I guess EhNow (which is kinda like the Canadian version of something similar to twitter) doesn’t let you view it without an account. Bummer.
Looks like the content is locked behind a login, any way to make this visible without signing up?
I suppose not. Ehnow is a Canadian social network though, found on Tod Maffin’s unplug America site (which I don’t have the link to right now but just search for it) it’s not like you’d have to sign up for some Zuck Meta crap. I don’t even use social media normally but I sign up anyway to give the site one more user vs the 'murican sites.
Edit: I changed the link to a screenshot you that you won’t have to log in to see what this is.
I’m, uh, curious. Protesting what? To who?
Like, I get that the American government has been exceptionally shitty, but I don’t see what a Canadian protest is gonna do about it.
I pray that we’ll return to being a reasonable neighbor asap. I promise we’re feeling it more than you are.

I don’t see what a Canadian protest is gonna do about it.
It reminds any Canadian still spending time or money in that shitstain of a country, that they are openly supporting fascism.
I hope to protest the belligerent, destructive foreign policy of the United States and make it clear to all concerned that in the opinion of the people of Canada, that the United States is an adversary, no longer an ally and not a country that can be trusted or taken at its word.
At the very least the canadian government will be more hesitant to appear to roll over and submit
You.
You sure got me. Are you also responsible for everything your government does?
I don’t pray for my government to do things, if that’s what you mean. I do things like vote, and protest when the big country next door threatens to make me part of the 51st state and constantly and relentlessly bullies and insults me.
You should read what they wrote. You’re protesting things you say you don’t like but then you say you protest people who agree with you. Pick a lane? Or maybe everyone is your enemy?
I don’t remember saying any of that. Did YOU read what I wrote? Is everyone being my enemy some sort of guess on your part? This kind of stupid shit is exactly why I left reddit. Learn how to have an adult conversation instead of “Oh maybe you’re this oh maybe you’re that oh you think this and you think that” Go outside.
Violence is the only answer. If violence isnt working its because youre not using enough of it.
Protesting does absolutely nothing.
I agree…but I would NEVER openly advocate for violence against the Americans on an open internet forum! I’m clutching my pearls with such shock and offence at the very idea! Oh no of course not we must ONLY protest and not get violent. And the Americans should certainly NOT get violent towards their government with their second amendment and all of their guns that they all have the right to and whatnot for basically the exact thing happening right now. Oh no how terrible that would be if they used all those precious guns of theirs to put a stop to the fascism. Certainly I would not advocate for violence like that oh no not me I am only posting about a protest.
Bunch of pansy cunts i see.
I feel like this would be more effective if it were held in the US. Maybe the Target parking lot in Amherst NY outside Buffalo where there are regularly still Ontario-plated vehicles every weekend. Target and Trader Joe’s evidently are more important than sovereignty for them.

I ain’t crossing that border.
Trump would love this; he’d sic ICE on them and call them terrorists.
“Canada INVADED us to try and shut down our country in collaboration with ANTIFA! They’re nasty and OUT OF CONTROL! Governor Carney isn’t doing anything about it so we might have to step in to get things under control again…”
They’d all get moved around the US to limit the effectiveness of protesting at any one facility and then they’d deport most of them to some other country just to be dog cunts about it.
I feel like this would be more effective if it were held in the US.
But that would require Canadians to cross the border, and we aren’t doing that these days.
Link has been changed to a screenshot.
