Once again, this ‘Republicans are secretly so gay’ meme stinks and DownDetector is not an objective measure of internet traffic. See this video for a more detailed breakdown.

When thousands of out-of-town delegates, staffers, and media personnel flood a single convention hub, the sudden data influx routinely overwhelms local cellular towers and app infrastructure

Wow, every single person in those groups must be a Republican! 🙄

Oh now I understand that actually the problem is evil gays control the government, thanks for clearing that up. Suddenly I no longer care how cell phone networks work or if data is real.

It’s not just evil gays, it’s also repressed and self-loathing closeted gays living in an oppressive system lashing out and making everyone miserable as they feel the world is unjust and everything must burn.

Remember, being gay doesn’t make one more or less human, only as human as anyone else. And since anyone else can be a fucking idiot, then gay people aren’t immune to that. Some people just know better.

Obviously some gay Republicans exist, and I pity them. Acting like it’s the entire party is both stupid and homophobic. Sorry, straight people are the majority and cause most of society’s problems.

Everyone has a little bit of gay in them as remnants of our evolutionary process, it’s just most people aren’t so afraid of it they’d go out of their way to get rid of it in any way possible. And the Republican party atracts those most fearful, fully gay or not, which inevitably increases the concentration of gayness at their conventions.

I feel like I’m shouting into the void every time I point out republicans are not the only people that come into town for republican conventions, and a lot of service workers and blue collar workers (ie, people most likely to come into town for the convention for their job) are queer.

The Republican Party attracts violent racists and misogynists, and they are overwhelmingly straight white men because that’s the demographic that shit attracts. Not that no gay people are like that, but there’s a reason we’re second only to black women when it comes to voting Democrat. The idea that closeted gays are secretly controlling every branch of government right now and not the straight bigots that overwhelmingly make up the republican party is frankly homophobic.

I hear and understand your position, but I disagree with it. Mainly because it’s not as much fun. But also because as you say, self-reports aren’t reliable and many people don’t self-report. So I can say the gay percentage of our population is much higher than the numbers show and the diversity of opinions is also larger and more mixed, from topic to topic, and be somewhat correct.

See I would assume we would see reports of grindr going down for things like DragonCon in Atlanta during such events, but whenever I search for them I don’t find them. Wouldn’t the groups coming to run those events be similar? I would have expected more queer people there to be honest.

Yeah, if they took town Grindr in Dallas, they would’ve taken Grindr worldwide or at least in North America. Basically nobody localizes apps like this, infrastructure is centralized. Yes, there is usually load balancing, but pretty much never is the load balancing logic “geographical location X always connects to server Y”. Maybe they’d do it by continent so Europe and North America hit servers in the EU vs the US or Canada respectively, but not on a city or state level, that’s ridiculous, extra complexity for negative benefits.
