I desperatey need to buy a new proper bed. Here are my initial thoughts/stats:

have sleep apnea so I feel like it should be adjustable

side-sleeper 99% of the time

no idea about how firm I like or want

Wonder if it would be best to buy in-store so I can actually try it out, I’m having a hard time stomaching the idea of buying something online with zero idea of what it actually ends up like, not that anything wouldnt be better at this point than my current situation

    I don’t know if they are available in the us, and with the current tariff war they may not be worth it, but we bought a Canadian Douglas mattress about 5 years ago and it has been superb. Most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on.

    It gets delivered in a box, and expands when you take it out. They have a trial period of 6 months, 9 months, or something like that. If you decide not to keep the mattress, they refund your money and rather than sending the mattress back they find a local homeless shelter or other charity to give it to.

    Take your favourite pillow and go to a mattress store. Take your time and lay on a bunch of different mattresses for like 10 minutes each, it’s the best way to find something that works for you. My mattress guy had me do this and it worked like a charm

    I don’t know if this advice still applies these days but I have been told to avoid the brands that start with a “see” sound, like sealy or serta.

    I have been happy with rubber mattresses. They have varying firmness sheets that comprise of the matress.

    If you go in store be sure to lay on a potential mattress for an hour. Just plan to hang out on it.

    get the firmness down before looking, what your body is used to. i bought one where the springs are tightly packed into some wrapping, so they dont deform over time.

    If you have the space for it. Ordering online and doing trials isn’t that terrible. The prices really are a lot better when I was looking for one a couple years ago.

    We had a spare room that we set the new one in. We tried 3 online brands.

    Helix, nectar, and winkbed. We landed on the winkbed.

    Returns were somewhat “hassle free”. But if we didn’t have our original bed to go back to between mattresses it would have definitely been a hassle.

      Can you talk more about returns? It sounds like an honest to god nightmare. Talk me down from the ledge and about how to make sure its risk-free. Thats the biggest thing for me right now

        Just make sure you don’t damage the unit or get a stain on it. We bought a water protectant cover for any that we tried. We also took pictures day of delivery and after setup. But we didn’t end up needing those for anything.

        If you have patience, it’s not terrible. But it’s still not a fun process.

        If I remember correctly we had to sleep on it for 30 days before we could initiate a return. We called them up, gave them our order number and a reason for not wanting the unit and they arranged for someone to come pick it up. You do not have to get it back in the box they send. That’d be impossible.

        Oh and the returns don’t cover any accessories you get with the mattress. A lot of these beds require a platform bedframe. We bought a 3rd party platform frame that we liked instead of the one that the mattress company offered.

        My guess is they’re banking on you thinking it’s too much of a hassle and so you won’t bother with the logistics.

    I’m gonna buck the trend here and say to get a coil spring mattress.

    I picked up a king from my local, like, alternative to Walmart, and it’s a coil spring mattress by Sealy or Tempur-Pedic, and it’s a little bit harder than I wish it was.

    But I threw a 3-inch memory foam mattress topper on top of it, and it’s like sleeping on a cloud.

    That being said, the reason why I recommend a coil spring mattress over a straight memory foam mattress is sexy times.

    Coil spring makes for vastly more capable and entertaining fun sexy times in my personal experience.

    The only annoyance that I have is, like, continuously re-locking in the mattress topper because it likes to slide around a little bit.

    That and I had to get deep pocket sheets for the bed to cover the distance from both the mattress and the topper.

    Still worth it. It gives you like an automatic plus one to your sexy times capabilities as a guy.

    And the whole kit, it was like $500, $550 for the king mattress, and then another $175 for the topper, but that’s honestly not that bad, before a mattress that feels just as soft and comfy as a $1,200 mattress, but gives you the fuck power of a twin in a dorm room

    Consider getting something made of memory foam. You know, Tempur or one of the competitors. It’s absurdly expensive, but you could think of it as an investment to your health. Maybe just start with a pillow to see how you like it. Buy the mattress only when you feel like you’re ready to spend that much.
