I’m watching the Macklemore thing and the cynic in me feels like it’s all virtue signaling and for show. I guess I have near zero confidence in the rich.

Part of my belief is all of the rage porn goes on twitter/meta and funds the billionaires which just furthers the cycle.

Do you think writing to some of these artists and asking then to leave Meta/Twitter for Mastodon would work? Could a difference actually be made?

    Unfortunately, in order to get your message to as many people as possible, you have to send it where people will actually see it. Whether we like it or not, thats twitter and Facebook.

    You can definitely ask them (in all likelyhood youll be talking to a PR firm) to add mastodon, but until mastadon hits critical mass, they aren’t gonna drop twitter.

      I think you hit the nail on the head. These celebrities are not on Facebook. Most of the accounts we see are not them. They have firms and people who manage it for them, avoiding scandle and making sure every word is meticulously crafted. None of it is authentic.

      Asking them to leave Facebook is basically asking them to uncheck Facebook from a social media manager’s management platform. It’s a non thing to them. The celebrity isn’t on their phone posting things, it’s all corporate now.

      The most macklemore may have done was write the baseline to his statement, but a team of PR people smoothed and rewrote it. He then probably gave a thumbs up to it afterwards. If there’s anything I’m 100% sure of, the words we read were not typed out by him.

    I’m afraid it’s not just celebrities. It’s all of us. We’re complicit because we are relatively quiet, apart from moaning a bit online (which is exactly where they want us to complain because it achieves nothing).

    People on the actual street complaining about their taxes being spent on murder and genocide maybe, and celebrities marching side by side. This used to be a thing: big in person protests. By giving us the internet to ‘speak up’ they effectively silenced us all and made us easier to ignore.

    We could end these platforms tomorrow with a little solidarity. I’m still shocked that so many are still there.

    Quite a few high profile people left Twitter after the Musk takeover, so it does happen.

    I don’t doubt Macklemore’s sincerity on Palestine - not that I have special insight of any kind on the man. Hind’s Hall was written so sensitively (both the lyrics and the samples used). He seems like a genuine case.
