Tigrayan rebels in northern Ethiopia seized control of airports and battled federal troops in the neighbouring Afar region, multiple sources told AFP on Wednesday, as long-standing tensions spilled into open conflict.
As someone who doesn’t know anything about the government that used to be there nor is there currently, is there any decently unbias sources on what is causing this or what each group is wanting to get out of it?
A quick bit of reading tells me that the current leader, Abiy, has basically installed himself as dictator. He canceled elections during covid and has been the de facto leader since. This BBC article seems to do a decent job of breaking down some of the sides, but the gist is greater ethnic representation, refusal to lay down arms and weaken regional defenses, greater regional autonomy, and the removal of Abiy and restoration of the democratic process.
