The problem I have with it is it is not at the end of your life technically. Like why can’t I pre arrange when this happens I want it. Now I have to do it well I am still of sound mind and body which means I would still have some good days left. Why couldn’t you enjoy those. Cause some diseases when they get bad it is to late to make the decision.
Quebec is the only province that allows you to leave directives ahead of time. You can specify that if you have dementia and are no longer aware of the world around you, you can end your life.
As far as I know you can leave sealed instructions with a lawyer in that circumstance. Though I have not looked into it.

The issue is that MAID has only recently become available. You should expect there to be a number of sufferors who would have used it sooner had it been available i.e. it isn’t a steady state and shouldn’t be compared to one.
That makes an interesting point. As I recall Canada as a whole had roughly the population of California about 40-50M? The USA has somewhere upwards of 300M total, so to be comparable Canada would have to be multiplied several times over.
Still, the fact that it’s pre-planned with proper checks and approvals puts it in a whole separate class from murder and crisis desicion suicide in the USA where comparison is pretty pointless anyhow.

I for one am happy there is MAID. I am almost 70. I have myofascial pain (depending on the doctor they also call it fibromyalgia and other names) pretty much everywhere. I have a pinched nerve in my back as well as arthritis in many of my joints. It’s been 10 years that I have endured this. When it gets too much I will be able to end it without having to try myself and most likely epically fucking it all up.
