This clip reminds me of those American movies and TV shows with drill instructors, abusive languages, personal insults, unnecessary violence, and more.
I have to say: I feel disgusted. It is also utterly stupid, unscientific, unproductive.
Unless, of course, your goal is to plunder the civilians of conquered/occupied territories, which tbf is exactly what the American soldiers have done around the world.
I have a limited exposure to military training in my own country - Vietnam, which doesn’t permit anything like that. Abusive behavior is illegal. Bullying is also illegal. Discipline (actual discipline) is valued. A good soldier must be a good person first.
I suspect this American military culture was partly responsible for their various atrocities in Vietnam.
I don’t know whether the actual American military has changed their methods, but their media and entertainment industry keep glorifying this. So I doubt there’s any actual change.
And it’s not just the American military. Their police (at least, the ways they were filmed by clips online) also disgust me. The American police treat unarmed civilians like they would treat dangerous wild animals. Forgive my dehumanizing language, but this is the only way to capture how I perceive the ways the American police treat their people. The police will shoot an unarmed civilian dead at a slight threat. And without threats, they would restraint civilians the same way they do dangerous wild animals.
Its always interesting to see the differences between military cultures in capitalist and socialist countries. Over here there’s nothing about being a good person, you join the military if you want to get money or kill freely or both. The most sadistic and murderous are often selected for special forces, because the demands of a dying capitalist empire necessitate a handpicked cadre of serial killers to carry out increasingly desperate and despicable strategems under deniable circumstances.
Your suspicion that the US’s dehumanizing military culture helped facilitate the atrocities commited against the Vietnames people is completely correct, but it also can’t be understated how massive a role racism plays
It’s kinda tropey how they portray this trainer as extremely sadistic but later turn around and show that it comes from a place of utilitarian kindness. I have never been in a military but I can assume you are much likely to just get the first part without the second.

I can speak to the US Marines first hand. You do get the “it’s coming from a good place” sort of moment when they give you for eagle globe and anchor and can actually be called a Marine. It’s literally a cult indoctrination technique, and all of boot camp employs such techniques. The argument is that it hardens you and builds cohesion of the force. In some ways it does, but but in any useful way. Other arguments are that you’re training for war and killing so it needs to be hard on you to test you under pressure… Maybe a tiny bit valid, but not exactly effective.
