Yeah, I considered mentioning it but didn’t bother. If you have enough money, you can just ignore whatever the government provides and pay for it yourself (which is ofc why the super wealthy often don’t like government programs supporting the average person). Sort of makes a bad situation worse when the average person is already stressed from the problems of population decline and then they have to deal with government programs being gutted because the wealthy don’t like them.

If immigration was the solution to everything, the US would be a paradise. It’s necessary but not enough.

Population decline also generally means more stress on government programs since the working population paying a larger share of taxes and just generally supporting the retired population is declining while the retired population is increasing. Eventually it might level off, but for a long while it would be bad for everyone (unless the rate of decline is small enough).

IMO this is more of short-term solution (having some immigration is always good though). All these countries with declining populations need to fix their societies to make it actually desirable for people to have kids. Immigration by itself won’t work forever (assuming the countries people are emigrating from fix their problems), but it will give them time to fix things. Problem is most of these countries seem completely incapable of actually fixing their problems, so…

New versions of chrome require Android 10 from what I understand. Presumably apps that are less essential will be more likely to remove support for older versions sooner.

EDIT: I’ll also note here that even if an app “works,” it may be with degraded functionality (where the missing functionality is increasingly important). For instance, passkey support in external password managers requires Android 14.

I’m using GuixSD on my desktop, and while I think it’s better in terms of creating stuff that doesn’t already exist in upstream repos, there’s so much functionality missing that’s present in nixpkgs and random flakes online that for the average person complaining about Nix jank it’s very likely not worth the effort. On the bright side they released 1.5 recently so you no longer have to use a 3 year old image (that likely doesn’t work right if your computer is too new) or a nightly one to get things running.

It doesn’t require deprecation. It could just be an app updating to use new APIs.

One potential problem is apps could stop working if they target a more recent version of Android.

Except it is still encrypted to the intended recipient. As the other commenter said, WhatsApp is just another “member” of the group that you can’t see. Basically all they’d have to do is have a server somewhere functioning as a WhatsApp client. Your client sends the message to your intended recipient. It also then sends the message to their “client.” The routing server for the messages can’t decrypt the messages. All the messages are still encrypted per-member of the group and can’t be decrypted until it hits the ends, but WhatsApp is basically a mole siphoning all your messages and storing them.

Obviously it’s deceptive. But if you individually encrypt the messages you’re sending, the one you send to the receiver still can’t be decrypted by Meta, only the copy sent directly to Meta can, so the copy sent to your intended receiver is still “E2EE.”
