PC Master Race@lemmy.world•Windows 11 is breaking Legacy Media Player features to push you to a modern app that uses 3x more RAMEnglish
1·23 hours agoYeah, I think so, I just tried the Media Player approach first and it worked well and is super easy to do, so I stuck with it. I like that it simply opens up a small window of a random screenshot I took and I can overlay windows over it but it keeps the screen unlocked anyway. I’m not sure if the same can be done with the PowerPoint technique? The eternally looping Media Player screenshot is nice since I’ll work in bursts; sometimes I’ll fuck off to Lemmy for an hour, other times only 5 min, other times I’ll actually work for several hours, all while the looping screenshot does its thing. (My work’s policy has our screens turn off every five minutes or so of inactivity and it annoys the absolute shit out of me.)

2·3 days agoFacebook got popular when I was still a freshman in high school, probably earlier, because I was a stubborn late adopter. I think my first Facebook update was trying to convince people to go back to Myspace. 🥲 Even back then I thought it was sterile and boring.
Part of me wonders how many people liked how Facebook catered to the “lowest common denominator” and didn’t allow for much else. I think of how Myspace allowed people to customize their profiles extensively with HTML. A common joke is how either Neopets or Myspace taught millennials the basics of web development through allowing custom HTML. I’m curious how many people on Myspace couldn’t figure HTML out and were envious of those who understood it/could make their profiles “look cool.” And viola! Here is Facebook! A social media platform where no one can make fancy customizations.
I know there’s plenty of other reasons Facebook succeeded, like “the feed”, which made it easy for people to stay up to date on everything going on with their friend group, which of course made it an excellent vector for the enshittification and propaganda generation observed later on.
They were playing Viva La Vida in the grocery store. I’m like… Okay, grocery store, I get you’re trying to “cater to my demographic” since we’re the “new olds” who now regularly shop for produce, but who the fuck thought Viva La Vida was a good “millennial shopper” music choice for picking out produce and scrutinizing cereal boxes? I died inside. Sacrilegious.
Hello, fellow new Lemmy user! 🐣
Switching from Reddit to Lemmy has been quite a breeze. I still check Reddit occasionally but it honestly doesn’t feel like I’m missing out too much if I don’t, it’s so nice. I’m at the point where my Boost usage is beating my RedReader usage.
As a Slav who enjoys Herrring in a Fur Coat, I am delighted to see an American “equivalent”! 😁

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Fox News might have a hit show on their hands
17·8 days agoIt seems poorly worded. I think they were trying to say that the person’s interpretation of what happened is a fact. Basically that someone can’t handwave away how a person says they feel as if it’s not true; how a person says they genuinely felt about something is true to them. I assume it is supposed to be targeted towards estranged parents who constantly dismissed their child’s emotions and literally cannot understand how that is a bad thing to do.
A witchy community on Lemmy! 😍 My new favorite place. 💕

I think Boost does have ads, but it seems like I probably paid for premium at some point because I haven’t seen any. Way to go, past me. (I’ll be sure to check out Summit though, it looks quite nice too!)

3·9 days agoAw, thank you, I appreciate the encouragement!
You know what feels great? Not having that feeling. Not having the whispering chorus of surveillance like a fat fucking argus of paranoia weighing on your psyche while you attempt to use YOUR computer.
For real! I saw the “windows wants to restart” icon next to my “Hibernate” option last night and I cringed internally. Every update they want to do makes me think “oh great, what creepy shit are you potentially going to slide in this time? (because it never feels like an update ever fixes anything I have problems with…)”
The Virtual Desktop sounds interesting, I didn’t know about that. I’ll give it a try first before attempting to do the install! Backing up my files is the first thing I plan to do, I’m kinda dragging my feet on that right now, but hopefully after I get that done, giving Linux Mint a try, especially with this Virtual Desktop thing, shouldn’t be too difficult.
I’m not too good with IT kinda stuff, so I’m not sure if I can figure out how to do a partition. Unless it’s easier than I’ve been led to believe. Though I guess if I backup all my files it won’t be a big deal if I accidentally mess up lol.

This is heartbreaking. What the hell.
