The 1700/mo is for all instances we host, with around 30k active users/mo. (If every active user would pay 1 euro per year, it would cover the costs) But it can’t be compared to Reddit. Reddit has employees. Employees cost more than infra. If I would pay myself and all the volunteers for the work we put in, the cost would be at least 10 times what it is now.

Codeberg runs on Forgejo, which you can selfhost. (If you wanna try, let me know, I can create an account for you on https://forgejo.world/). It has (or will have) activitypub (federation).

Friendica is nice, I’d say try it (https://friendica.world/), but host it yourself if you like it. Personally I use Sharkey (https://sharkey.world/) which you can use like Mastodon, but with longer posts, and you can create pages (like this one https://ruud.social/@ruud/pages/postgresql ).

The FHF is the foundation owning all instances (https://fedihosting.foundation/hosted/). So the costs are for running all the .world instances. The contribution to FHF is the costs for running the non-profit foundation itself.

The Patreon was setup when mastodon.world was the only instance… haven’t renamed it yet.

After trying it for a while, I’ve now bought a license. Really cool app.I only have an issue with scaling, but I created an issue in Github for that. Edit: nvm, I just failed in finding the right setting :-)

Hmm I don’t see that yet. Awaiting a resolution to an issue before we do the upgrade.
