Also happens in Starship Troopers. All the veterans are missing limbs and are confined to wheelchairs, crutches, arm slings; as prosthetics are all but unheard of because they are perversely proud and happy to have gotten their disfigurements and disabilities.

I think you should replace whichever comma is between “are confined to” and “are all but unheard of” with a full stop (or maybe semicolon?)

Star Wars also has physically disabled people that can’t afford prosthetics or upgrades.
