    Why it’s personal for her:

As a soldier for over 21 years, I deployed to multiple war zones in different parts of the world, putting my life on the line for the safety, security, and freedom of the American people. It is important to me and every one of my brothers and sisters in uniform that we have a Commander-in-Chief who values every one of our lives, who carries that responsibility as Commander-in-Chief very seriously, and who will exhaust all diplomatic avenues before seeing war truly as a last resort.

So that’s a position on the isolationist/interventionist axis rather than the left/right one. Twenty years ago, someone opposed to foreign wars would have voted for Kerry.

I personally know people who are going to vote for Trump because they support the policies they expect from his administration even though they don’t like him personally. Gabbard wouldn’t say that even if she thought so because it would damage her career and it would be counterproductive when endorsing Trump. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t think so. I would have more respect for her if she did say it, but people who are willing to end their career rather than compromise their principles even a little don’t have careers in politics.
