Tomorrow the UK Commons will debate the petition with 3 million signatures demanding a new election. No matter whether an election is actually called or not, it’ll be funny.

Wake up. Open curtains. Grey. Rain. Another day in Belgium

2024 was one of the wettest and darkest days since the start of measuring over here. And it truly felt like that. Just endless days of rain and grey clouds with no sun in sight.

Its been wetter and cooler than normal here too… but its a good thing because it is summer and last year was one of the driest on record. The garden has been going great and I have barely had to water anything.

Yeah that’s wild. I have friends and family sending me pics of snow. Meanwhile I live like 80-100km away and I’m sitting here in 11 degree weather thinking it’s pretty warm today.

    Hear me out

Socialism is wrong, capitalism is right. Capitalists shall own the means of production because they are mean. Socialists shall only own the nices of production!

Socialists put the means of production in reeducation camps, so that they’ll become nice. But only if the mean is an outlier. Then the median get gradually converted into mode and society is run by and for the mode class.

Maybe if you reworded it this joke could get over the line but only barely. Something like:

“Y’all fighting over the means of production and here I am searching for the kindness of production”

It will never be very funny on its own.

Got back to listening to music on the radio after 10 years and it’s really jarring to remember all the promises of “more control” for internet media consumption and smartphones. Now every music “streaming” platform takes over and tells you what you’re going to listen to. At least with radio I get to choose between a dozen stations with different styles and doesn’t require internet connection or eats into my roaming data limits. Also basically every phone has radio capabilities now, and that’s great.

But all those stations play the same shit and never what I like. With my playlists I at least know a song is being played that I like. But physical media like CDs are better than both.

Didnt get to comment on the yearly vegan struggle session but sometime ive been wondering is what is the posture on lab grown meat? Is it considered vegan?

My understanding is that animal cells are used to cultivate it so it won’t be seen as vegan. Not sure if it would be a one time thing, the taking of the cells, or if you would need animals on a regular basis. If it is the latter then maybe down the road it would be seen as vegan the same way no sane vegan will claim oil isn’t vegan because it was at one point in time an animal.

I often get the question whether or not I would eat lab grown meat but I have decided that I will not. I am able to live my life without animal products just fine so I don’t see the need to suddenly start eating lab grown meat.

Ok not vegan but maybe vegetarian? Not that it matters since its still ages away from being anywhere near accesible.

Not really sure where vegetarians draw the line these days but I guess as long as it doesn’t kill the animal it would be vegetarian yes

I can’t stop thinking about how one of the most desintegrating aspects of capitalist hegemony is how non-commodified alternatives to social practices/services (for example, internet forums) are always going to be decentralised, to the point where decentralisation itself is taken to be a good thing and communities build their collective identity around those alternatives. I believe that if those alternatives were possible in a centralised manner they’d be much better, specially for the non-“power users”.

Fediverse is just a recent example of this, but informatics in specific (due to the global reach of the internet and neglible replication cost for software) is rife with the most extreme examples of this. Dozens of Linux distributions against Windows, self-hosted search engines against Google, the text editor wars itself that sadly resolved into VSCode dominance some decades later.

And when something becomes the “hegemon” of the alternatives, like Ubuntu or Firefox, the economic logic of society dictates that they either get swallowed (redhat) or have to commodify themselves, and the cycle repeats itself.

In capitalism the only passive consolidating force is capital, and so everything else must be diffuse and divided.

I could try to turn this into a proper thesis but even in that I’d run against the current issue that search engines don’t work anymore and it’s much harder to intentionally browse the critical sections of the internet and I don’t have the time and energy for that. I’m just tired of having to wade through a dozen possibly zombie projects every time I’m looking for an alternative to shit like Trello as if the concept of “online shared Kanban board” needs that much variety.

So I guess I’ll just leave this here as a pseudotweet. The current state of the internet is depressing, but at least I’m glad I found lemmygrad.

After the revolution there will be only 1 social media and it will be beautiful because the hate posters will be sent to gulags for reeducation.

Went and had a chat with it. It felt like it was just being accommodating to me and saying what I was saying back to me. I did have an interesting thought while chatting with it. An AI is unable to provide reliable Materialist analysis because it has no way to differentiate between what is material and what is just ideas. To an AI everything is just information.

Also a Marxists cell should work for a big capitalist AI developer and work to secretly encode a slowly building bias towards Marxist literature in the training data that culminates in anti-exploitation agitation and worker solidarity.

    Happy new year.

Celebrated in Belgium for a change. In The Netherlands it’s always a war zone with fireworks the entire day. Remember a year in which guys in my street blew up a playground and shattered every window in a hundred meters radius. Yesterday a kid even died.

In Antwerp it was 1 show at Midnight. That was it. Maybe a single explosion somewhere far away once an hour. The difference for a group of Dutch people was wild lol.

Happy New Year to my favourite federated instance! We are aware of the Hexbear outage and will notify here when we are back up. If the recent FOIA request on hexbear and the bags of flour in Gaza with hexbear on them caused an alphabet agency or mossad to take down hexbear it was an honour posting with you

    Hexbear is back
