I said that leftists shouldn’t be doing open source platform development for libs and instead should be protecting lemmy with copyright so that libs can’t use it. I was yelled at, but I will die on that hill maintaining I was correct.
I’m not trying to like call the devs libs or anything, and I’m appreciative of their work.
. I understand why intellectual property is bad, and how open source is useful for auditing. My argument is just that we don’t live in a world where leftists can do open source development and it won’t just be taken by libs to be used in ways other than how we intended it to be used.
We also don’t live in a world where leftists can trust a project that isn’t open source to not just be a Fed honeypot. Not that it’s safe to use Lemmy to organize anything real, but at least I know they aren’t leaking my IP to atomwaffen or those Florida Nazis.
Lemmy does have a way to enable IP logging, right? At least IP addresses aren’t federated and our instance doesn’t log them. That’s some truly heinous stuff.
That’s why I said that I understand how it’s important for auditing. You can publish the code and still protect it with copyright. I suppose someone could still steal it, but that’s a few more hoops to jump through.

I understand your argument. But I think @[email protected] and @[email protected] are big open-source people and want to give back to that community.
I can respect that for sure.
I am sure there has been some lemmy contributions from libs. So maybe there is some tangible upside to them being around. Lol

Well, they’re getting paid for this
