None!
I have a large physical collection backed up to my jellyfin server, what I save on subscriptions I spend on media.
RTe via ExpressVPN. But only for Tommy Tiernan.
I have Walmart+ because getting groceries from the store to my apartment via bus…is not as fun as I thought it would be. Luckily since I’m on some government assistance programs I get it for half off. Paramount+ is included in the sub, so I’m using that.
I also use Pluto.tv / Tubi / etc since they are free. Along with Hoopla, which my local library offers for free. I’ve also got an HDHomeRun setup with an antenna to catch the local channels OTA and stream it to my laptop since I don’t have a TV.
At one point I had Hulu/Disney+, Max, and BritBox all at the same time and I just couldn’t. Especially with Hulu, I’m paying for the service and have to be subjected to ads? This is not the cord cutting revolution I was promised! I’ll put up with the commercials if it’s a free service to a point.
I’m Canadian so I got rid of everything save for our streaming platforms, Crave and Gem. Not giving the US money anymore.
Elbows up!
Yar har fiddle dee dee
Now I just need recommendations. Got anything new and exciting?

My favourite “streaming service” by far: torrents!
Jellyfin
I’ve not heard of that is it American?
I would say it has no geographical barriers nor DRM or other restrictive approaches… LOL
its a self host stream platform, you provide, trough more or less legal ways, the content and jellyfin let you watch it over the network.
Its like Plex, but free and without a company (so no end vitrification) backing it.
I’ll have a Google thanks
It’s a selfhosting software like plex.
Free ones from my public library. They’re surprisingly good but there’s no trashy reality tv shows or whatever. Mostly wholesome documentaries and classic movies.
Also the state-owned broadcaster in my country has a decent one, although ad-supported.
I’ve canceled them all and run Jellyfin and IPTV.
Got so sick of paying for literally six of them and still not finding the movie we wanted to watch.
Plex.
Edit: I just remember I also have nebula, curiosity stream and an unhealthy amount of patreon subscriptons. Though that’s not exactly “TV” I guess.
Stremio + Real Debrid = bliss
Region is Canada. TV is connected to an AppleTV and a media server. Forced to use mostly apple stuff for various reasons.
Free and generally ad-free Apps:
- CBC Gem (free tier but login)
- DW (news/docs)
- France 24
- Al Jazeera
- Kanopy (via library card, all good movies)
- NFB for the best shorts
- Knowledge Network (free in BC)
- Local news channel apps
For self hosted media files I access a SMB share with the Infuse app for a full video player experience. It’s the only subscription I pay for an app, worth it.
Left Netflix last year. Left Prime this year. It’s all shit sandwiches over there.
These days, the only ones I stay permanently subscribed to are independent platforms: Dropout and Nebula. They’re both cheap, entertaining, and they feel like responsible companies trying to make a positive change in their industry.
For all the others, I subscribe on a month by month basis when there’s something specific I want to watch. I try not to have more than one active subscription at any given time.
None.
none. We watch discs.
When I was in Canada that was my chosen medium. I didn’t even bother with anything past “basic cable” on the television. If it was worth watching, it was worth putting on DVD and I had HUNDREDS.
Not really an option here, so it’s the pirate’s life for me!
All glory to physical media!
Can’t agree more :)
