Yeah, because appeasement always works so well.

„Solve“ meaning it‘s a long shot and „Very quickly“ meaning it would only be short term. Trump can not be trusted as a partner so your only choice is to walk away, really.
wtf is this oligarch propaganda
how about spend $0 on american shit
fuck america
sincerely,
an americanRight there with ya, citizen. ✊🏼
“Just give the bully your lunch money, and they’ll stop asking for it in the future. It definitely won’t result in them coming back tomorrow to shake you down again.”
I really think Trump just wants some win for his ego and to present to his followers. I don’t think he will keep asking for more money, or at least we will make it clear, that we will not go along with further demands. As long as the stuff were buying is needed here and we buy it at the normal market rate I think we should do it for economic stability
Are you familiar with the term “appeasement”? Or the children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? The demands don’t stop here and giving in to them will only embolden Trump further.
Yeah no, I read all the small prints of everything on the shelves and look up who the company belongs to, if it’s american, it goes back on the shelves, upside down.
Just stop buying American wherever possible
Ah yes, extortion; the biggest Wrench in the Art-of-a-deal-Toolbox.
It’s the only one Trump likes to use, since he’s too stupid to actually negotiate.
Donnie is used to having the leverage. He can’t even consider the possibility that he doesn’t inherently have leverage. Combined with the fact he doesn’t know how to handle politics, we end up here.
He treats everything like his only tool is a crowbar, because that’s all he’s ever known, it’s worked, and he’s too stupid and dementia-riddled for any alternative at this point.
America makes stuff?
Aside from toxic food?
They make a shit ton of toxic software too! 🫠
They also make bad cars and fighter jets they can switch off any time they like.
We actually manufature more stuff now than we did during the “golden age” of manufacturing in the '60s and '70s. Significantly more, like 300% more. We just automated the shit out of everything we could, so we do it with 1/1000 the people working.
We‘d rather not.
EU nations could commit to spending an extra $56 billion on American products to end the tariff showdown with US President Donald Trump, EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said in an interview with the Financial Times published Thursday.
Sefcovic, who has been leading negotiations with the US administration, said that “certain progress” had been made but the European Union would not accept the United States’ 10 percent tariff on EU goods.
Sefcovic said that once US services are taken into account, the US trade deficit with the 27 EU nations is about 50 billion euros ($56 billion) a year.
“If what we are looking at as a problem in the deficit is €50 billion, I believe that we can really . . . solve this problem very quickly through LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) purchases, through some agricultural products like soyabeans, or other areas,” the commissioner told the FT.
This guy can’t be seriously going along with Trump’s narrative of trade deficits, right?
through LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) purchases
Or we could invest that €50bn into something like a massive wind farm, battery storage or similar and increase independence from oil entirely
Hell, if they were selling renewables competitively, it might be a more compelling argument.
We will not do it out of kindness but since the US gov. doesn’t understand how the economy works its better to save our economy for 50 bn instead of tanking it by letting tariffs stay in place. I personally avoid US products but the effects for our economy would be way worse if we don’t reach a deal. Trump isn’t reasonable and we rely on the US militarily to a certain extend. Let the toddler have his win since stability is what our markets need the most. Yes its extortion but we need to minimize damage. We are the reasonable and reliable ones in the new world order so the soft power the US loses is way worse in the end.
Yes but America doesn’t sell those, besides if we’d spend that much on tech it might be a losing game if we spend it outside the eu
“Just do what the bully wants, duh.”
Fortune.com. hmmm, I wonder if they are media representing the working class?
Strange that they would hold the stance of “just spend a ton of money on yankie shit”
It‘s a stance of a EU representative but I am sure Fortune is very happy to spread it.
Haha get rekt
I mean… could also be done by… not doing that?
To be clear, because some poeple are going to misunderstand. This is a EU rep currently negotiating with the US, not a US rep. He seems to be saying they could meet whatever arbitrary fantasy for trade balance is in Trump’s head tomorrow because the EU spends enough on a couple of US exports that meeting their request is trivial or at least possible.
Thing is, it is a fair expectation that those goalposts will keep moving. And we now know for a fact Trump will blink because he’s not just blinking but cowering in a corner while begging for mercy on the back of China telling him to go trim his toupée.
The question for the EU is whether they want to kick this can down the road or fix it permanently.
