Gary Johnson, former governor of New Mexico, was the Libertarian Party’s candidate for the 2016 presidential election in you-know-where. In a talk show on MSNBC on September 8 of that year, Johnson was asked by panelist Mike Barnicle, “What would you do if you were elected, about Aleppo?”
“About…?”
“Aleppo.” Barnicle repeats.
“…And what is Aleppo?” Johnson says with a bewildered expression.
“…You’re kidding.” — “No.”
Barnicle takes a moment to compose himself, his tone indicating that he is himself bewildered and perhaps a bit disappointed by what he’s just heard. And Barnicle explains, “Aleppo is in Syria. It’s the epicenter of the refugee crisi—”
“Got it, got it.” Johnson interrupts with an almost robotic tone. Barnicle mutters “Okay.” in what I read as a politely frustrated tone, as Johnson finally manages to drag the interview back to his own material.
Johnson’s “What is Aleppo?” comment was widely clowned on at the time as an apparent display of his ignorance.
This fails to account for the amazing delivery on the ‘…And what IS Aleppo?’ line.
Really if I were being the absolutely most faithful to the incident as it occurred, I would’ve written “a LEPO” instead of “Aleppo”, cause Johnson himself said that he believed Barnicle was talking about an acronym rather than a location in Syria.
It’s this new spice at your local health food store. But be careful, it’s spicy!
